Coach Carlos Dunga has constantly been under fierce criticism from the Brazilian national team supporters. The former World Cup winning captain always seems to bear almost all the blame from A Seleccao’s mistakes.
But Dunga has apparently managed to overcome this issue by responding with excellent results throughout these past months. It all started with a stunning 6-2 thrashing of Portugal in Brazil. The five-time World Champions then displayed a mesmerizing performance at the Emirates Stadium by defeating Marcelo Lippi’s Italy 2-0.
Carlos Dunga’s ability to lead his team to victory doesn’t only come in friendly matches but in competitive games as well. The 42-year-old – who failed to guide Brazil’s U-23 squad to Olympic Games glory – has helped A Seleccao to master three consecutive victories in the World Cup qualifiers.
These great signs of betterment are made of an excellent defensive recipe combined with flair and skill in attack. The 2007 CONMEBOL winners made sure of maintaining the first post in South America’s group zone, with a 2-1 win against Paraguay, before heading to South Africa for the Confederations Cup tournament.
This coming Thursday, Brazil face the USA in the battle of the American continent.
The Yankees lost 4-2 in their last game against Brazil; that was two years ago when Barcelona’s former number 10 Ronaldinho was still an integral part of the Brazilian national team.
The United States’ home supporters surely remember how influent Ronaldinho was in that friendly encounter. Now they might find relief ahead of the game, as the Porto Allegre-born playmaker is absent from Brazil’s Confederations Cup squad.
But instead of being distracted by all these analysis and odds, Bob Bradley would not put his mind on that result. The coach rather wants to take it game by game in this mini-tournament. Speaking to the media, he said:
"You need to start things right, set the right rhythm in the first game. After you do that, you can focus on the next game. If you get things right, and in the right order, you give yourself a chance to be playing for something at the end of the tournament.
"That's what we want to be doing,"
The USA – who see this Confederations Cup tournament as the ideal dress rehearsal for the World Cup finals in 2010 – might relish this chance of playing the 2002 World Cup champions Brazil.
The result of this game will certainly have a lot of impact on USA’s team spirit. Anything less than a defeat might hugely boost the Yankees’ belief in the team’s spirit.
Where will the ball go? Will it land in Northern or in Southern America?
