Fifteen years ago, Carlos Dunga led Brazil to World Cup glory. The former national team skipper played against Italy in the 1994 World Cup final in the USA. The game had to go down to penalties after 120 barren minutes. Carlos Dunga scored from the penalty spot to give Brazil their third goal of the afternoon. After that, Italy’s Baggio smashed his penalty kick over the bar, to blow away the Azzuri’s hopes of clinching the World Cup trophy. Celebrations quickly began… Carlos Dunga had successfully led Brazil to World Cup glory.
Now in 2009, Carlos Dunga is the coach of the Brazilian national team but he is far from being a celebrated legend. Dunga – who has gone under much criticism – will stand the opportunity of repeating his luck against Italy when he comes up against Marcelo Lippi
Dunga has the upper hand against Italy’s Marcelo Lippi. They affronted themselves earlier this year in a friendly match in London and Dunga’s Brazil run away 2-0 winners against Italy.
Brazil will want to repeat their achievement, this time in a competitive tournament. Can the Samba Boys edge past the Azzuri?
Group B is anyone’s for the taking. Brazil have all but secured themselves a place in the semi finals. However, mathematically, the entire job is not done yet for the Brazilians. Brazil won all maximum points from two games – beating Egypt 4-3, then the USA 3-0 to top the table.
Meanwhile, Italy failed to increase the three points that they secured in their opening game; the Azzuri dramatically lost 1-0 to the Egyptians in the second round of the Confederations Cup. The 2006 World Champions have all to play for when they come up against Brazil. While there are very few probabilities that Brazil will exit from the group stages, there are huge possibilities that Italy will be ousted.
The Italians will have to win if they want to avoid relying on the outcome of the Egypt v USA match which will be played on the same day.
On the other side, Carlos Dunga is set to fill his squad with the best players of the Brazilian national team, although his side could afford to draw, or in some cases, to lose by a one goal margin. But the Samba Boys will certainly show no mercy for the Italians.
Italy were tipped as favorites to qualify alongside Brazil. Now the Azzuri find themselves in a very uncomfortable position. Considering the difficulty level of the third round fixtures, Egypt have become favorites to steal at least the second and last qualifying spot of the group. How will Marcelo Lippi’s men respond to the pressurizing situation in which they find themselves?

The game could indeed be decided by the youth. Giuseppe Rossi’s inclusion in the Italian squad against the USA was vital. The Villareal striker came off the bench to net two bullet goals which ensured all three points to Italy.
Giuseppe Rossi might continue to perform impressively for the Azzuri when he comes up against Brazil. However, he will have to deal with the possible presence of AC Milan’s Alessandro Pato.
The young Brazilian chap knows all about Italian soccer. He plays for the Rossoneri and has proven several times his ability in front of goal.
There could be a hot battle between these two young players who are destined to become great in time.
Who will emerge victorious from this battle?
Above all, who will win this gigantesque clash featuring Brazil and Italy?
