Bolivia are yet to record an away victory in this World Cup qualification campaign. La Verde kicked off their track to South Africa 2010 with a crushing 5-0 defeat to Uruguay in Montevideo. Their horrible away form continued with a 3-0 defeat in Argentina and a 5-3 loss in Venezuela. Things didn’t get any better when Bolivia played their second home game of the campaign against Chile.
After suffering three defeats and one home draw out of the four qualification matches, Bolivia thought of kick-starting their campaign with a good result against La Roja. However, a double from Gary Medel with one goal in each half gave Chile a well deserved victory on the day, leaving Bolivia desperate to find a win in the qualifiers.
Bolivia will meet their predators Chile again, this time in Santiago. Out of their six away games in the qualifiers, Bolivia have picked up only one point – and that was when they astonishingly drew goalless against Brazil. Bringing an end to their miserable record of five away defeats and one draw in their World Cup campaign will give Bolivia some pride more than some hope of reaching South Africa 2010.
Bolivia stumble 2-0 to Colombia in their last game away from home, which tells us that La Verde very much needs to regroup before getting things right. A trip to Chile isn’t the kindest fixture as the Bolivians are looking to put a stop to their humiliating away form.
Besides the fact that the Chileans are ranked amongst FIFA’s top 30 teams in the world, La Roja have also proven to the rest how good and dangerous they can be by beating the likes of Argentina 1-0 to reach the qualification zone of the table.
However, if Chile have been able to master seven points out of their last three qualification games, they also have their lows just when it really shouldn’t occur.
Chile played in the Kirin Cup friendly tournament in Japan in the last week of May, where they lost 4-0 to the hosts with striker Okazaki emerging as the star man in the game. Chile then unconvincingly drew 1-1 to Belgium and eventually missed out on the final of this mini-tournament.
La Roja resume their qualification campaign with a match against the current table leaders Paraguay and will continue with a game at home to Bolivia. The difference between these two sides is that one has the prospect of reaching the finals of the World Cup in South Africa 2010, while the other (Bolivia) are virtually out of the contest but can still play for pride, and perhaps create a stunning comeback.
But Chile would not take Bolivia’s miserable status for granted. The Reds will try and recover from their recent poor form. They currently seat third above big guns Argentina and Paraguay, but they still have a lot to do if they want to deal well against these countries’ strength in depth and spirit.
In terms of statistical analysis, Chile are way favorite to pick all three points from the encounter against Bolivia. It will be Chile’s fourth home game since losing back to back to Paraguay and Brazil in Santiago. Since then, the Chileans have recorded excellent results on home soil, beating Colombia 4-0 and then Argentina 1-0.
However, their last home game – which ended in a goalless draw against Uruguay – could signify an alert for the squad.
