Mexico vs Trinidad And Tobago Match Preview

By Angela Asante, Jun 1st 2009
CONCACAF’s struggling warriors Mexico take on Trinidad and Tobago on June 10 at the Estadio Azteca.

Despite having a 100% home record in the qualifiers, Mexico’s overall run in the campaign has been miserably poor and emphasized by a 3-1 defeat to Honduras. Mexico’s coach Aguirre would love to see his side pick from where they left off in the country’s last match home game which they won 2-0.

Mexico are currently out of the qualification zone for automatic tickets to the finals of the World Cup. They need to up their performance and find back the threat that they once knew how to pose against their opponents.

Mexico’s coach, Javier Aguirre, backs his Mexican national team players to boost their spirits. Speaking ahead of the country’s upcoming qualifiers against El Salvador and Trinidad and Tobago, Coach Aguirre said:

"We can't be fearful; we have to think about winning matches at home and away,"

"We must always play the same way home and away, not tactically, but in terms of attitude.

"We can't think that, just because we're playing away from home, that we're already losing,"

He concluded: "I have full confidence that in our three remaining away games, our attitude will be to try and win the game.”

The 40-year-old Trinidad and Tobago player is now the coach of the national team after Francisco Maturana resigned in April. Russell Latapy may still be in charge of Trinidad and Tobago and thus guide them as they face Mexico on June 10.

The Soca Warriors are currently bottom of the table, so the task ahead for player-coach Latapy is enormously huge but the interim manager is relishing the challenge.

"I'm absolutely delighted with being given opportunity to be coach of my country's national team. It's something I've always wanted to do.

"Aside from playing the game and always trying to help my country, my main ambition was always to coach the national team; I would like to thank the Association for giving me this opportunity,

"The task ahead of us is by no means an easy one but I think once we can get everything together, and with the support of the nation, we can achieve our goal which right now is qualifying for the next World Cup,"

Trinidad and Tobago, who lost their last away qualifier 3-0 against the United States, will be looking to wound Sven Goran Eriksson’s former side Mexico to boost their chances of reaching the finals of the World Cup for the second time in a row.
