El Salvador vs Mexico Match Preview

Angela Asante, May 21st 2009
The pressure is mounting on the Mexicans after a 3-1 loss to Honduras in April downed them to fourth in CONCACAF’s six-team qualifying table.

Mexico have won only one match out of their last six World Cup qualifying games and they just can’t afford to slip again as their dream of reaching South Africa is hanging from a thread.

The 51-year-old Mexican is well known amongst his people for his success in guiding El Tri all the way to the 2001 Copa America final (where they unfortunately lost 1-0 to Colombia), and also to the last 16 of the 2002 World Cup in Korea-Japan.

This was quite a remarkable achievement for Mexico who were completely down during Enrique Meza’s reign due to poor results. So Aguirre returns to the squad as manager after such a long absence. The former Osasuna and Atletico de Madrid boss took the post in April from his predecessor Sven-Goran Eriksson, and he is keen on leading Mexico to success.

Speaking at a press conference on April 16 earlier this year, Javier Aguirre made a few important statements:

"For me it is an honor to return home"

"May the player who comes, come with pride, with identity, with love for the shirt,"

"Let this be a prize, not a punishment, because this is a prize for our careers."

Aguirre’s first game in charge since his appointment as coach of Mexico will be away against El Salvador.

Coach Aguirre’s Mexican squad

The national team will have their first training session at Mexico’s High Performance Centre, on May 27.

The Mexican gaffer has recalled Chicago Fire’s veteran forward Cuauhtemoc Blanco in the national team. The 36-year-old had retired from international football in November last year when the squad was managed by Sven-Goran Eriksson, but a recall from Javier Aguirre didn’t even had to be echoed. Mexico’s football federation director, Nestor de la Torre, told the media:

"Javier (Aguirre) called him (Blanco) up for these two matches and not to give him a farewell game or something like that,"

"He has the skills to give a lot to the team."

Javier Aguirre has also given the go-ahead to Miguel Sabah. The Morelia striker might enjoy his first-team qualifying debut against El Salvador after earning his first call-up for a competitive game – having only featured in friendly matches previously.

One other player who has made it in Mexico’s 23-man squad is Tigres’ Oscar Perez. The goalkeeper last played for his country in 2005 and now comes in replacement of Oswaldo Sanchez.

"It was a surprise,” Perez declared.

"I had a good season, but I did not expect this call. I am very happy and I hope to help Javier (Aguirre) in this new phase,"

And talking about hopes and dreams, here is what Tottenham Hotspurs’ 20-year-old attacking midfielder, Giovani dos Santos, had to say ahead of Mexico’s two qualifiers in June:

"We have to work hard in these two weeks because these two matches are crucial. We have to win both."

El Salvador

It might seem like El Salvador are no big threat looking at the standings of the CONCACAF zone group table. La Selecta have only two points from three games and are just one place above bottom team Trinidad and Tobago. But El Salvador – who were just twenty minutes away from securing a historic hard-fought victory against the United States of America back in March – managed at least a draw against the Yankees.

El Salvador go into the Mexico encounter with the 1-0 defeat to Costa Rica still in their minds, and will be keen to overturn this result. On paper, Mexico are favorites to beat La Selecta.

But can the underdogs worsen Mexico’s sorrows and spoil Javier Aguirre’s first game in charge of El Tri on his return to the squad?
