Coppa Italia Final: Lazio v Sampdoria – the unlikely finalists
With a semifinal line-up comporting Italy’s giants Inter Milan and Juventus up against Sampdoria and Lazio respectively, the expectation of most of Italian football lovers was to see a final showdown between big rivals Inter and Juve. But both Lazio and Sampdoria broke the odds meaning that Wednesday’s Coppa Italia will see Lazio and Sampdoria clash against each other at the Stadio Olimpico in the final.
Sampdoria’s road to the final
Sampdoria managed to surmount the effects of thrills, drama and disappointment by seeing off Empoli, then Udinese in a dramatic way, while the match against Inter Milan was one to celebrate as the Blucerchiati found their way through to the final of the Coppa Italia.
Sampdoria went through some stressful moments in the quarterfinals against Udinese. Antonio Di Natale cancelled out Pazzini’s strike on 63 minute and the Udinese striker even had a late chance from the penalty spot to steal Sampdoria’s place into the semifinals. Di Natale missed his kick at the relief of Sampdoria, meaning that the game had to go to extra-time. Sampdoria eventually won the day in a dramatic 4-1 penalty shoot-out to face Inter Milan in the semis.
It was another affair though against the Nerazzuri. Sampdoria came out 3-1 winners on aggregate to seal their place in the final for the first time since 1994 when they last won the cup.
How Lazio reached the final
Lazio’s road all the way to the Stadio Olimpico where the final will be staged is equally remarkable. The Biancocelesti ousted Benevento and Atalanta before implicating the same plight on AC Milan in the last 16. It was an outstanding encounter which broke the hearts of the Rossoneri fans as Shevchenko’s 77th minute goal was ruled out by Mauro Zarate’s 87th strike that forced extra-time, where Pandev goal on 92 minutes was enough to give victory to Lazio.
Lazio then met Juventus after kicking Torino out of the competition. The Biancocelesti triumphed 2-1 in both legs to reach the final in style.
Sampdoria and Lazio’s reward for beating the likes of these two big teams – Juventus and Inter Milan – in the semifinals of the Coppa Italia is the final in Rome.
Analysis
On an analytic point of view, Lazio look favorites to clinch the cup – a trophy which they won five years ago. It could be the right time for Lazio to get away from all the internal troubles that the club is enduring. But facing the likes of striker Cassano might just be the greatest obstacle.
The Italian has been in great form lately and his omission from the Italy national squad has raised a lot of debates towards Marcelo Lippi’s choice.
Either way, the tie is still very much balanced between both sides and whoever wins it will find consolation to their domestic campaign who hasn’t been the best in the Italian Seria A. Sampdoria are virtually out of Europe for next season while Lazio still have a lot to play for to pip the likes of AS Roma and Palermo.
Well, it was certainly not the final that people were expecting, but there’s some curiosity about how two teams who kicked out giants will fair out in the final come Wednesday, May 13.
