Champions League: Barcelona v Chelsea preview

Everyone talks about Barcelona as the true unstoppable team in Europe with their goal hammering and their flow. The Blaugrana humbled teams like Real Madrid and Sevilla in the Primera Liga and disgraced Beckenbauer’s Bayern Munich and French champions Lyon on their way through to the Champions League semis. Will Chelsea be Barcelona’s next casualty?

Untouchable flying Barcelona?
It seems like Barcelona have found the secret key to unlock the den of goals. Pep Guardiola is on his way to creating the greatest Barcelona side. Clinching a couple of trophy this season will ultimately elevate this Barcelona squad as the greatest of all time, and to do that, the Catalans will need to overpower Guus Hiddink’s Blues to reach the final before they can fancy their chances of winning the European title.
Guardiola is well aware of the impact that trophies have on the success of a team, and he underlined his opinion when Marca interviewed him after Barcelona’s league game against Getafe last week:

"The record that matters is winning titles, one has to win something and we are heading towards that. That is what motivates me to come here and play,"

Barcelona’s legendary captain Pep Guardiola is enjoying the best of luck at the moment and his side’s remarkable success is also a result of a high winning mentality added to his attacking flair philosophy which has influenced the players’ performance. Barcelona’s number one safeguard doesn’t come from their almost-perfect-style of play but from the humbleness of their coach Pep Guardiola. The 38-year-old Gitano prefers to avoid being carried away by his team’s explosive results and rather wants to go match by match and keep his feet on the ground.

“Since I have been in charge there has not been a game that we have not taken seriously. The team was well and fresh, therefore I decided not to make any changes," the coach explain.

"We have come here after a hard game in Munich and we have played a great first-half. The second-half was not so good, but they did not get in our area. We will keep going in all competitions."

His players have been responding in the right way at the moment…

Who would have thought that the Great Bayern Munich would have bowed out of Europe with a crushing 5-1 aggregate score line?
Coach Guardiola is relishing the strong challenge of playing Chelsea in the semis. Speaking to The Sunday Times, the Barcelona manager said:
"It is a privilege to be up against Chelsea,"

"I mean it's a privilege for us to be up against a team as strong as them in the semi-final.

"Chelsea are a side who, but for one slip, we would be calling the reigning European champions.

"It's one of the games you want to go out to enjoy."

The question now remains: Can they hold on to this stunning progress in Europe and see out last year’s beaten finalists Chelsea?

Chelsea’s shaky defense, Messi a player to watch

Chelsea have apparently been struggling at the back in recent games. The Blues conceded up to five goals over the two legs against Liverpool in the quarter-finals and it’s time for them to find a solution as they’ll be facing Barcelona’s Argentine troublemaker Lionel Messi.
Adding to Guus Hiddink’s defensive worries is Ricardo Carvalho’s exit from the Chelsea squad that will face the Catalans at the Camp Nou. The Portuguese defender suffered a knock against West Bromwich Albion in a reserve game for the Blues… and this proves to have cost him a lot.
Hiddink will try and resolve his problems and ease his headache as he’s got to select the best back four to confront Barcelona’s torrid attacking forces.

In Petr Cech, Chelsea used to possess Europe’s best goalkeeper. The Czech still posses this prestigious title, but in reality it seems like the stopper is losing his miraculous hand just when Chelsea’s defense needs to be at its full best.

John Terry’s spectacular clearances are also rare these days. Chelsea will need some grace from heaven to deal with Guardiola’s Blaugrana. Will England’s U-21 Michael Mancienne provide some indispensable power at the back for Chelsea?

Following Ashley Cole’s suspension for another yellow card he received against Liverpool, Michael Mancienne has been given the go ahead to keep Messi’s feet from creating miracles.

The young player is relishing the moment:

I would love the challenge of facing [Lionel] Messi," Mancienne revealed.

"The manager came to watch and I was asked to have a go. The manager is keeping his options open.

"They told me a couple of days ago I would have a go at left-back and I did ask Ashley a few questions about it. It felt all right."
There’s no doubt that this tie will provide a high level of drama on Tuesday night. Are the Blues ready for this thrilling clash?
