The English, European, and World Champions will continue the defense of their UEFA Champions League title on Wednesday night when they host Arsenal at Old Trafford. The Red Champions are unbeaten in the Champions League in over 20 games with a very strong home record. The Theatre of Dreams could create yet another mesmerizing atmosphere when the Red Devils come up against the Gunners in what promises to be one of the most classic encounters of the season.
A test
Manchester United are striving to clinch the quadruple this season. After bowing out from the FA Cup on penalties, the Mancunian Reds are looking to satisfy their disappointment by clinching both the EPL and the Champions League titles – two trophies which they won last year.
The Red Devils will try to overcome the misery the suffered in their last European semifinal tie when AC Milan crushed them out of the competition 5-3 on aggregate despite winning at home in the first leg.
Manchester United are at home this time around again for the first encounter and they’ll hope to uplift themselves from the performance they had in their last match at Old Trafford in Europe. A disappointing draw against Porto put their hopes of qualifying to the next stage at stake; It needed them a solid defense and Cristiano Ronaldo’s 35-metre-rocket for United to break Porto’s record and ultimately qualify into the next stage of the competition.
It will be an equally difficult game against rivals Arsenal and Ferguson is feeling the tone of the game:
“It’s going to be a great semi-final. There'll be some great football in that one," said the 67-year-old Scot.
The season is reaching its climax and this encounter will really determine the Red Devils’ potential in their bid to become the best Manchester United squad ever.
Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal are hungry of titles and they are desperate to end this long wait. The Gunners’ last major final was back in 2006 where they eventually lost 2-1 to Barcelona in the Champions League. Wednesday night will be a chance for them to get a step closer to achieving their dream of winning the European crown and they are keen to do so against their great rivals Manchester United.
"We've got the belief that we can win the Champions League. It's going to be hard because we are playing one of the world's best teams in Manchester United,” Van Persie told the press earlier this week.
Arsenal have been hit by injuries in recent times and this comes as a big blow to the Gunners who could be missing their Dutch striker Robin Van Persie for the two legs. Four-goal-hero Andry Arshavin would not be allowed to feature in the game. The former Zenith player is cup-tied. However, the return of Adebayor, Djourou and first choice keeper Emmanuel Almunia has boosted Wenger’s confidence ahead of this important clash.
Between the Big Boys and the Young lads
Manchester United will host Arsenal once again in the EPL on May 16 and this could be the day when the Premiership defending champions clinch the cup in front of their own fans.
Coincidently, it appears like Wednesday’s clash is a rehearsal of what could be the fixture that would give Man United the EPL title.
The story between these clubs is more than huge and the rivalry renewed especially when Arsenal defeated Manchester United at the Emirates in the first part of the domestic season.
The Red Devils will try and overcome the nightmare that could happen on Arsenal’s home ground in the second leg by getting a very good result at the Theatre of Dreams. Certainly, that won’t be that easy. However, Cristiano Ronaldo believes that a slim 1-0 win at Old Trafford will do for the Reds and the World Player of the Year is assessing the challenge.
“Arsenal is a fantastic game. We know each other. We played a few time in the Premier League. It’s going to be tough but we have to believe. We are contenders of the Champions League; everything is possible.”
It’s hard to define who will win this battle. Manchester United surely benefit from good old men Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs who have more up to 1400 appearances between them. But you can never take something out from Arsenal’s relatively young squad who knows how to create surprises by stunning experienced sides.
Can Arsenal spoil Manchester United’s season?
