FA Cup: Manchester United v Everton Preview
2007’s FA Cup beaten finalists Manchester United play Everton at Goodison Park in the semifinals of this domestic cup competition. The Red Devils qualified to this stage at the expense of Fulham with a comfortable 4-0 victory back in March. Now the season has reached its crucial stage and the English, European and World Champions are enduring some difficult moments just when it really shouldn’t happen. Can they find some grace when they meet David Moyes’
Toffees on Sunday?
Red Devils going from weak to strong again?
Manchester United’s recent unstable form seems to reveal that the team – which has played more games than any other side amongst the big four at the moment – are suffering from fatigue and thus lack of concentration.
A crushing 4-1 defeat in the hands of Liverpool followed by a 2-0 loss away to Fulham in the league were two key moments in the Red Devils’ campaign; two games that tested the Champions’ strength like iron is tested in fire.
Manchester United are yet to get the better of their opponents in every match that they play these days. The good football that they used to put on show earlier this year has been replaced by some patchy performances characterized by an astonishing poor defense.
If United have managed to score eight goals in their last five games in all competitions, they’ve also struggled a lot to keep their lines clean as statistics show that they’ve let eleven good goals into their net.
After two consecutive defeats right at the end of last month, Manchester United were just about to turn their campaign in the most disastrous in Europe.
However, ‘Kiko’ Macheda’s presence in United’s last two EPL games proved to be more than vital. The 17-year-old Italian sensation looks to be shaping Manchester United’s title dream on his own after coming off the bench to score the winner against Aston Villa and Sunderland.
United are keen to find back the great form they once had this season and one thing is sure: it’s no time for slip ups.
How the Porto game might have an effect on the Everton game
At this stage of the season, every game is like a final. The Red Devils are not only standing stiff competition from Liverpool in the Premiership, but are also facing the challenge of retaining their European crown.
Manchester United play Porto in the Champions League four days before they resume their successful FA Cup campaign against Everton on Sunday, and it goes without saying that the outcome of their fate in Europe will have a huge effect on the rest of their season.
Qualification into the semifinals of the Champions League would suggest that Manchester United would be the first English team ever to beat FC Porto at the Estadio do Dragao. In other words, it will be an enormous boost of confidence for the Red Devils who haven’t really shown their true face in their last four games.
On another hand, an exit from the Champions League could mean disaster in Manchester United’s road to success this season – meaning that the score line against Everton may be a continuation of a negative result against Porto should this occur.
Everton dreaming of keeping up their good track
The Toffees didn’t reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup at a cheap price. They had to crush the likes of Liverpool in dramatic fashion to stay alive and qualify to this stage since 1995.
The irony here is that the last time Everton won the FA Cup, it was 14 years ago when they defeated Manchester United by a lone goal to lift the trophy.
Manager David Moyes will hope his team emulates the heroics they did against rivals Liverpool – this time against Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United.
The score line between Everton and Manchester United has always proven to be tight since the past couple of years. Cristiano Ronaldo has been Everton’s main problem especially. The Portuguese Superstar’s 44th minute penalty downed the Toffees at Old Trafford in their last meeting against Manchester United this season.
While Alex Ferguson will want a repeat of that victory, David Moyes will be out to correct himself on the few mistakes that cost him this defeat.
One thing Everton might try and do is to distract Manchester United’s spirit. The Toffees don’t have much to lose going into the encounter although their campaign in the Premiership isn’t the best that an Everton supporter could wish for.
A six goal thriller which saw them draw 3-3 against Aston Villa at the weekend couldn’t help them to beat off the Villains to the fifth place in the league. Qualifying for Europe remains an uncertainty for Everton but defeat Manchester United in the FA Cup might restore their faith and offer them a bit of pride as the season is coming to an end.
Manager David Moyes has recently been linked with the Manchester United job should Ferguson retire. However, the 45-year-old Scottish man firmly brushed away these speculations which somehow appeared to him as mind games ahead of the FA Cup clash.
"I try not to take any notice but obviously stuff comes back to you. It is nice. But maybe it's Alex Ferguson having a different kind of mind games...to soften David Moyes up,” he stated in the News of the World.
"That might be the case or it might not. But I would never be disloyal or disrespectful to my club.
"Yes, it's a nice thing. But was it not only a year ago that people were saying it was going to be Roy Keane or Mark Hughes or Martin O'Neill taking over from Sir Alex?
"I really enjoy this job and I'd like to win something for these supporters.
"A lot of supporters get fed up with managers being changed. Everton supporters have been really good to me and I'd like to give them something back. It would be a great way to cap the season."
