Like at Old Trafford on April 7th, there was no winner at the El Madrigal when Villareal hosted Arsene Wenger’s Gunners in the Champions League. Captain Marco Senna opened the scoring in the first half with a long range shot only for Adebayor’s 66th minute wonder goal to cancel the Yellow Submarines’ lead. The two clubs will go head to head again on Wednesday night at the Emirates Stadium, and both know how hard the test of passing the quarterfinal stage will be…
Arsenal confident about reaching the semis
An away goal is always precious in Europe; that’s exactly what Arsenal secured in their visit to the El Madrigal on Tuesday night. No English team has ever won on Villareal’s home ground, neither were the Gunners able to do so.
But Coach Arsene Wenger isn’t worried about his team’s inability to steal a victory. Instead, the French man was full of praises for his young squad:
"This team has shown all season that they are mentally very strong. Our young players always have an answer. I'm confident that we can go through because we have good mental strength and desire. But we will still have to be on our toes because Villarreal are a very good team.
"It was a great goal by Adebayor, and a great game. Both teams played very well but they made it difficult with their early goal. I was pleased with the way we came back.
"We took over in the second half and it puts us in a good position. Adebayor's goal was unexpected and even the keeper was surprised. I thought his body was in the wrong position to score but he turned it into an advantage for him - it was a great goal.
"After that we had many more chances and we could have scored a second goal. But I'm very proud of my players."
One thing Arsene Wenger will fear is the loss of former captain William Gallas and first choice keeper Almunia. The defensive pair sustained bad injuries against Villareal which might turn out to be a big blow to the Gunners ahead of the second leg at the Emirates on Wednesday.
Speaking to French media Canal Plus, Wenger explained: "Gallas has a medial ligament injury."
"The initial diagnosis doesn't appear to be very positive, but it will be clearer on Wednesday."
"As for Almunia it is the second time he has twisted his right ankle, and generally that means a three-week lay-off," he added.
Switzerland international Johan Djourou and Polish youngster Fabianski proved their ability in the absence of Almunia and of Gallas as Villareal couldn’t manage to score anymore.
Villareal prefer to stay positive.
The Yellow Submarines may be sorry to have earned only a draw at home, but Santi Cazorla insists Villareal are capable of beating Arsenal when they travel to England later on.
"It's been a shame but we still have our chances, the tie is open and although the 1-1 score line favors them, we've already shown that we are capable of scoring away from home, as we showed in Athens," Cazorla stated.
The defender – who has been ruled out for the rest of the season – will relish nothing else than the result they earned away to Panathinaikos in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.
"The first half was ours, we controlled the ball and we got ahead, but in the second half they (Arsenal) were better."
"The tie remains open and we have our chances. The result means we have to score at least once in London but we always go out to win so although it's difficult, the tie is open.
Like Santi Cazorla, Captain Marco Senna is also optimistic about the future.
"Arsenal have the advantage, because they have scored an away goal but by winning there we will be in the semi-finals."
Meanwhile, Villareal President Fernando Roig also made some comments over the 1-1 result that his side managed at the El Madrigal:
"The tie remains open and we have our chances. The result means we have to score at least once in London but we always go out to win so although it's difficult, the tie is open.
"These are the Champions League quarter-finals and everything is open, as has happened with Manchester United, who had been clear favorites against Porto."
Both sides have everything to play for in when they clash against each other at the Emirates Stadium. Who will come out victorious?
