Chelsea vs Liverpool Match Preview

Chelsea poised to finish off Liverpool and reach the Champions League semis

Chelsea surprised Liverpool by coming from a goal down to beat them 3-1 on Wednesday night at Anfield. The Blues were poor in the first thirty minutes of the game, allowing Fernando Torres to open the scoring with a quick shot that went unseen by keeper Petr Cech. At the other end, Didier Drogba missed two glorious opportunities to put Chelsea back in the game.

But a wonder header from Ivanovic – which leveled the score line minutes before half time – proved to have turned things around.

The midfielder headed home his second of the night in the second half before Drogba sealed the victory with a superb tap in from close range. From there, Liverpool were totally sank under Chelsea’s blue sea…
There was no flood of goals or clean sheet like in their last two games at Anfield. The Merseyside Reds’ astonishing 4-0 victory over Real Madrid in Europe and 5-0 win against Aston Villa in the EPL suddenly became a story of the past.

Chelsea have one foot in the Champions League semi-final round

Scoring three away goals against an experienced team like Liverpool in Europe is certainly the best thing Guus Hiddink could have wished for before the encounter.

"I admit it was an unexpected result, but we are very happy with the win and it was well deserved,” the Chelsea boss avowed after the match.

"We pinpointed areas in our opponents' side where we could hurt them. The team could smell that and they took advantage. We talked about that situation again at the break and made sure we continued in the same way."

"We started very sloppily, the jobs we were doing in defense were not as good as they could have been. We let them score far too easily, but I can only compliment my team for their recovery from that set-back. Straight afterwards we could have equalized on two occasions.

"But we reacted well, we scored with a very good set-piece and from then on the confidence flooded through our team. If you feel the opponent can be hurt in some part of their team, it would be stupid not to go for it."

The Blues – who had previously lost to Liverpool at every occasion this season – are now in a very comfortable position to reach the semifinals of the Champions League.

This result means that Liverpool would need to secure at least a 3-0 victory at Stanford Bridge to see off their rivals and Rafael Benitez feels how difficult things have become for his team.

"For their first goal there were three players near to the scorer and they were not able to stop him. And then something very similar happened for the second, we made bad mistakes at crucial times,” the Spanish manager stated, reflecting on the game.

"Now we know we have a difficult task in the second-leg. We have to score three times and that will be very difficult.

"But we must believe we can do it. We have scored four at Manchester United so we know what we are capable of.

However, this seems unlikely to happen – as much as a Barcelona exit at the expense of Bayern Munich who were trashed 4-0 on the same night looks impossible.

But football is a round game and the ball can fall anywhere. A repeat of the performance that Liverpool had at home to Real Madrid may see them upset Chelsea.

On the other side, Guus Hiddink will try and put some icing on the cake and cover Abrahamovic’s wounds after Liverpool ended Chelsea’s remarkable unbeaten record at the Bridge in the EPL back in 2008.

The most thrilling clash of the quarterfinals has now become the most entertaining encounter of this stage from a Chelsea fan point of view.

The world and I are already thinking of the Barcelona v Chelsea clash that will certainly be one of the Champions League semifinal clashes.
