It was a game that United was supposed to win… a game where they should have killed off Porto’s spirit of 2004, when the Dragons controversially eliminated the Red Devils out of Europe.
Manchester United didn’t start the game on the right tone. Accumulated mistakes resulted in Rodriguez stunning the home side after only three minutes gone down the clock.
The Red Devils were nowhere near their best form and at a point, one may even think that United were the travelling team – given their unimpressive show. Manchester United came close at times to score more goals – especially twice through Ronaldo – but Porto’s keeper Helton denied the Reds on several occasions.
Goals from Rooney in the first half, and Tevez at the 85th minute seemed to have sealed the win for the European Champions. However, Porto fought back and got what they deserved: a late equalizer from Mariano to level the final score line at 2-2.
Manchester United: Let’s blame ourselves!
This result surely wasn’t the best for the Red Devils who were playing on home soil. Some may associated that with the tight schedule which saw United play Aston Villa in the EPL just two days before. However, Fergie preferred to put the blame on his players. Speaking to ITV1, the Scottish boss complained:
"First half they were the better side but second half we improved and got more possession. But getting the goal [through Mariano] the way they did, we should really have defended that. It was a bad goal to lose.
"It's been a hard two days for them, but they were lacking in concentration.
"You get a 2-1 lead with four or five minutes left, you really should see it out.
"We've got a game on Saturday [against Sunderland], there's still a lot going for us, but it's a difficult game now in Porto, no question of that."
One of the goal scorers on the night, Wayne Rooney, also considered blaming himself and the squad:
"We knew Porto were a good team, we had videos on them before the game," The striker told Sky Sports.
"We knew what to expect and we should have dealt with it a bit better, I thought.
"They have got a good away record in Europe this season and we knew what we needed to do, but we just didn't deal with it, simple as that."
Rooney continued: "Going back there we will have to make sure we play the way we can and hopefully we'll get the win,”
"Thankfully we're still in the tie as it could have been worse tonight. Hopefully we will go there and prove ourselves to be a good team and get the victory.
"We created a lot of problems for ourselves as a team and you don't really want to do that.
"If teams do some great things, fair enough, but we created a lot of problems for ourselves and hopefully we can cut that out."
Make history or walk out!
There will be no room for mistakes when Manchester United travel to Porto next week and Red Devil goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar knows how much his team need to find back the remarkable defensive form they built earlier in the season.
The Dutch keeper has failed to keep a clean sheet since breaking his record against Newcastle a month ago. Since then, Van der Sar has let 10 goals into his net in as much as four games only and he is desperate to see this dreadful record end. Speaking to UEFA.com, Van der Sar declared:
"It is not that they are great goals from the opposition,"
"We have to sort it out and start focusing. We have been successful for a long time this season and we have to make sure we get back to that.
"If you look at the last four games obviously we haven't played as we were doing in the games before that. We need to recover that mentality.
"I don't think it is a lack of confidence. We've played a lot of games and have a few players injured and when you come to this stage you need to have all your best players ready."
Manchester United will travel to the Estadio do Dragao with the aim of scoring and winning no matter the situation. No English team has ever won on FC Porto’s home ground in the Champions League. It will be time for the Red Devils to break this record before they can progress to the next stage.
"They have some quality – you have to expect this when you get to the quarter-final – and they had some chances,” Van der Sar stated talking about Porto.
"We need to do better and we've spoken a lot about it. We have a difficult job to do now; no English team has ever won there, which is a big challenge.
"We have to prepare the best we can, hopefully we'll get some players back from injuries and make it to the semi-final."
Unhappy Coach Alex Ferguson showed so much concern at Porto’s late equalizer but he also expressed some confidence over his team’s ability to break history:
"We just have to win. We have been first at everything at this club. Let's hope we can be first again,” Fergie told Metro.
The Scot’s wish is yet to become reality. Travelling to the Estadio do Dragao is a delicate do-or-die affair.
Can the Red Devils kill the Dragons in the Portuguese’s own fortress?
