It was another easy day for Barcelona in the Champions League, as they didn’t have to struggle to beat their German opponents Bayern Munich in their first leg match of the quarterfinals. The Spanish giants had a comfortable 4-0 home win; but a controversial decision from the referee in the first half might have been a possible reason to Bayern’s humiliation.
Barcelona took the lead in the early stages of the game after Samuel Eto’o placed the ball onto Lionel Messi who scored his first Champions League quarterfinals goal.
Shortly after that, it was Messi’s turn to give Eto’o a chance to score. The argentine forward nicely served Eto’o with a true ball, which allowed the Cameroonian striker to put the ball at the back of the net with no real difficulty.
The game then became unfair when the referee failed to sanction Thierry Henry for a reckless challenge he made on Bayern’s keeper. Although the goalie was obliged to undergo extensive treatments, it looked like the officials were far from changing their minds.
Messi then went on to score his second goal of the night; and even before the first 45 minutes were over, the French striker Henry had already managed to add his name on the scoring sheet.
Barcelona then relaxed in the second half – eventually, with Bayern Munich unable to pull a goal back, the match ended 4-0.
So, Bayern are now the second consecutive team in the Champions League to be destroyed by Barcelona’s flood of goals – but at least, they can give their fans an excuse.
Now, they can only think of a way to overturn the score line when they meet the Catalans again in the Arena Stadium.
Of course, this is not the impossible; however, it is clear that hard work, determination, and belief will be required to achieve such a task.
Nevertheless, Barcelona have nothing to worry about as they have many chances of cruising trough the next stage of the competition easily. Moreover, Barca can also be relieved by the fact they were capable of preventing their visitors from getting an away goal. Thus, they can now think of staying positive in all of their games so as to carry on with their fine form this season.
"I was pleased with every aspect of our play and I get goose bumps when I see how hard my players are working," Pep Guardiola declared after the game.
"But it's just the first leg of the quarter-finals and we need to keep our feet on the ground and try to score one or two goals in the return leg."
Surely, this is the only target of Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola, and currently, he seems on the right track to reach his goal as Bayern Munich seem to have completely lost hope.
Their chairman Karl-Heinze Rummenigge couldn’t hide his frustration:
"We have no chance in the Champions League now; that is obvious.”
"We must focus on the Bundesliga and make sure we qualify for the competition for next season. And we can start with our next match this Saturday against [Eintracht] Frankfurt."
Guardiola’s Barcelona are being regarded as favorites to lift the European trophy this year, and considering the amazing shape of his top players these last few months, there is no doubt that he could lift up to everyone’s expectations.
Well, in addition to Barcelona, there was another team, which also grabbed the spotlight: Chelsea FC.
The Londoners beat Liverpool 3-1 on the night; therefore, they seem pretty much the favorites to qualify into the next stage of the competition.
However, this means that Pep Guardiola will have to prepare his side for a tough game against Guus Hiddink’s forces.
