After playing away to the Netherlands on March 28, Scotland will host Iceland in Hampden to conclude their double-header in their World Cup qualification campaign.
Scotland’s head coach George Burley has had headaches selecting his squad for the country’s two qualifiers that will take place in a space of four days.
Several injury reports have come out from the Scottish camp. It seems like they have been hit by an annoying epidemic.
It started with Kris Commons, David Weir and Kirk Broadfoot. The trio was ruled out from the squad that will have to face Holland in Amsterdam.
However, if Commons should be available against Iceland, the same could not be said for Weir and Broadfoot.
''Kris Commons is away back to his club but could be back for the Iceland game,'' Butcher said, explaining the situation.
Conversely, Weir – who sustained a knee injury – and Broadfoot, who is still suffering from the foot and calf injuries which prevented him from featuring in Rangers’ 2-2 draw against Hearts last Saturday, are definitely ruled out of the team for the Iceland game.
Celtic’s skipper Stephen McManus though is said to recover in time from the injury he picked up in training last week to face the Strákarnir okkar.
''McManus has got a swollen ankle. It's improving day by day but we don't think he'll play on Saturday, he is doubtful.
''We are optimistic about his chances for the Iceland game,” Scotland’s assistant manager Terry Butcher said.
Regular faces James McFadden, Shaun Maloney, Lee Miller, Garry O’Connor, Barry Robson and Kevin Thomson are also all missing from Coach George Burley’s selection because of no other reason than injury problems.
Now the latest player to have been reported injured is Celtic’s Paul Hartley. According to a spokesman from the Scottish Football Association, the midfielder left Scotland’s training camp on Tuesday night with a hamstring injury.
Olafur Johannesson’s Iceland aren’t doing too bad in their qualification campaign. They managed to upset Macedonia 1-0 on home soil before the campaign halted; they could capitalize on Scotland’s physical weakness caused by injuries to take another three points.
Scotland don’t have enough to rely on ahead of the clash against Iceland. But 30-year-old Gary Teale might possess the perfect tonic to power his team in their bid to qualify for the World Cup finals in South Africa.
Teale enjoyed only his second call-up into the national team since the Scotland manager played his first game against Croatia one year ago.
Gary Teale is the only new inclusion in Scotland’s 26-man squad. Burley explained this surprising choice:
''He has been in excellent form with Derby County this season and he has pushed his way back into the squad. He gives us pace, which we have maybe been lacking, and he is a natural wide player.''
New players sometimes add flavor to games. Let’s see what Teale’s presence will give to Scotland’s injury-hit squad.
