Day 1’s two losers in CONCACAF’s sole qualifying group, Mexico and Honduras, clash against each other on April 1, 2009 at the Francisco Morazán Stadium in Round 4 of the CONCACAF region qualifiers for South Africa 2010.
Honduras recorded only their fourth win in a total of 26 meetings against Mexico back in November 2008 in an encounter which defender Ricardo Mendoza Osorio would rather love to forget.
A 52nd minute own goal from him proved to be the match winner for the visitors at the end of the 90 minutes. Mexico’s unlucky number 3, whose missed penalty caused El Tri’s exit from the 2006 Confederation Cup semi-final at the expense of Argentina, endured yet another nightmare on that day.
Defeating Mexico on April 1 certainly won’t be an easy task for Los Catrachos who are placed 39th in Fifa’s Coca Cola World rankings, 15 places below the Mexicans.
But Coach Reynaldo Rueda will hope his players build their confidence on the home advantage factor. Honduras have an encouraging record of 12 wins out of their 13 games played on home soil since February 6, 2008 with Panama being the only team to defeat them since then. Mexico will consequently be the second side to beat them at home this year they succeed in their bid to overturn the disappointing 1-0 defeat they experienced against Los Catrachos the last time the two met.
Being the underdog sometimes is a privilege. Honduras will try and get a good result in their first home game in Round 4 under no serious pressure, while anxious Mexican fans will want to see their team record their first away victory since they last won in Belize in June 2008.
Honduras certainly doesn’t possess a remarkable World Cup history, qualifying only once 27 years ago. However, they can surely boast of their famous 2-0 quarter-final victory over Brazil in the Copa America back in 2001 where it took the likes of Colombia to prevent them from reaching the final.
Perhaps are they ready enough to surprise the big names in the Group. Can they repeat their last triumph over Mexico and create trouble for them?
