Will Ecuador turn the tables around?

Ecuador are one of the most inconsistent club in South America’s Group Zone with very mixed results in their qualifiers.
A bad start against Venezuela in 2007 was emphasized by a 5-0 trouncing in the hands of Brazil and a 5-1 crushing defeat away to Paraguay. Ecuador quickly bounced back though with an overwhelming win at home to Peru which helped them build an unbeaten record until they met Venezuela again away where they went down 3-1.

These results are the cause of their 6th place in the table, 11 points adrift the leaders Paraguay. All the same, Ecuador have all the chances in the world to reach the finals in South Africa. Mathematically, they are very much on course to qualifying to the World Cup.

Now the question is, are they realistic contenders?

To cruise into the top four means that Ecuador will have to beat off the likes of Brazil, Argentina or Chile in their next games to secure themselves automatic tickets to the World Cup in 2010. Otherwise, a fifth place finish is still an option. But there are good teams like Uruguay, Colombia and even Venezuela out there who are all striving to enter the final draw for South Africa 2010.
Ecuador’s game against Paraguay on April 1 will certainly determine the country’s current status. Are they good enough to grab themselves tickets to the promise land?

Well, we’re all yet to know that. One thing is sure… Ecuador’s result against Paraguay will basically reveal their level of confidence; surely, it’s never easy to be inconstant and play with the group’s leaders.

However, what happens in the previous encounter against CONMEBOL’s defending champions Brazil will certainly have a lot of impact on Ecuador’s psychology for the following match which is against Paraguay.
