Brazil vs Peru Match Preview

Are Dunga’s Brazil set to respond to the people’s criticism?

BrazilBrazil take on Peru on April 1, in what will be their second qualification game in a space of four days. The South American champions have a slight advantage over the Peruvians in terms of head to head according to history. Both sides have met seven times in the qualifications stages for the World Cup, with Brazil winning four and losing only once to Peru.
But among the three draws that they have between them, the last one came in November 2007 when Kaka’s stunning 30 yards first half volley was canceled by Juan Vargas’ 72nd minute deflected shot.

Between commitment and skill:

Coach Dunga will have some kind of a headache for the selection of the players that should feature against Peru.
Star names like Ronaldinho, Kaka and Adriano could only be featuring as substitute due to various reasons.

Former Barcelona talisman Ronaldinho seems to have relation problems with Dunga who rather interprets Gaucho’s frequent omission from the starting lineup as an issue of match fitness.

The same reason applies to Inter Milan’s Adriano but in reality, there’s a sensation that something really is going wrong in Dunga’s relationship with these two lads.

Meanwhile, we’ll still have to wait and see whether AC Milan’s playmaker Kaka will be granted a first team place. The 26 year old attacking midfielder – who dropped out of the Brazilian squad that won the Copa America in 2007 for health reasons – is yet to enjoy a peaceful season. Kaka, also one of the most fouled players in the Brazilian team, has to deal with the risks of endangering himself while he is still appealing on referees to grant him more protection on the field.

On the other hand, Manchester City’s Brazilian duo, Robinho and Elano could miss out on Dunga’s first XI; Despite securing Brazil’s two goals at the Emirates which saw Italy defeated for the first time in over a year, the Sky Blues duo are yet to impress in club competition with Manchester City failing to survive in both the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup, and being currently out of the European zone in the Premier League.
Coach Dunga will need to sort out the players who are truly committed to playing for their country’s colors from those who have big names but underperform.

Brazil’s form in the qualifiers:

After winning the Copa America, Brazil haven’t managed to impress on the South American continent. Disappointing draws against the likes of smaller teams like Peru and Colombia have let them well behind the group leaders Paraguay. Moreover, their goal crisis at home which dates from November 21, 2007 going has increased the fans’ pressure not only on the coach but on the players too.

Despite overwhelmingly defeating Portugal 6-2 in Brasilia this year, scoring on home soil in the World Cup qualifiers for South Africa 2010 remains Brazil’s challenge which they’ll want to overcome against Peru on April 1.

Dunga the cause? Scolari an option?

Brazil’s road to the finals in Africa is so far not the most enjoyable to follow on a Brazilian supporter point of view.

With a bad home record of 270 minutes gone down the clock without being able to put the ball across the goal line added to unconvincing performances throughout the qualification stage, the Brazilian FA has started questioning Dunga’s ability as a manager of A Seleccao. The pressure on the 1994 World Cup winning captain has stressed more than ever, especially because of Luis Felipe Scolari’s availability now.

The former Portugal coach endured somewhat of an unsuccessful spell at Chelsea, which led to his sacking just 8 months after being appointed in replacement of Avram Grant by the club’s owner Roman Abrahamovic.

Big Phil is the last man to have guided the Samba Boys to World Cup glory in 2002; with this sweet achievement still in the minds of the Brazilian people, bringing Scolari back to where he once belonged is nothing but an easy thought to have.

Two things though that might help Dunga retain his position as Brazil’s manager is the team’s recent awesome display against rivals Portugal and Italy respectively.

On the other hand, Coach Scolari has simply decided not to mingle in any way in Brazil’s managerial problems.
After all, winning the World Cup with a country could be an once-in-a-lifetime achievement, and if Luis Felipe Scolari was able to do that with Brazil, one may also state that it was his last triumph on the international stage after failing to hand Portugal any trophy during his five managerial years with them.

PeruEither way, Brazil have every right of feeling confident that they’ll reach the finals in South Africa. Something they may probably fail to secure though is the honorable first place finish in South America’s group zone which is currently being occupied by Paraguay.

As for Peru, they are virtually out of the automatic four places for South 2010. Even the fifth place is far from being guaranteed. They’ll have almost nothing to play for but pride when the clash against Brazil on April 1.
