The road to South Africa 2010 resumes on March 28 in Europe, with Portugal playing host to Sweden in what is believed to be a crucial encounter for Carlos Queiroz’s side especially.
The former Manchester United assistant is yet to impress the fans since taking on the reins from Luis Felipe Scolari. With only 5 points from a possible 16 in Group A, the pressure is mounting like flames on the Euro 2004 runners-up.
A narrow 1-0 victory at home to Finland powered by a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty back on February 11 is all Portugal can rely on to motivate their spirit before clashing against Sweden on March 28.
Despite opening 2009 with a 3-2 loss against the USA in a friendly and being ranked 25th in the Coca Cola Fifa rankings – 13 places below Portugal, history make Sweden favorite to snatch at least a point when both meet for the second time in Group A.
With 6 victories and 5 draws out of the 14 matches they played against Portugal, woes are on the Seleccao to perform as anything less than a win may see them shatter their dream of reaching the finals in South Africa.
More...Portugal have a major defensive problem which they need to settle before having to deal with the likes of strikers Larsson and Sweden’s prolific goal scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Former number 1 choice goal keeper Ricardo is now struggling to keep his place in the 22 men squad. The Real Betis stopper’s disappointing form has led Queiroz to look for other options.
At the other end, the Portuguese will need to be more accurate in front of goal if they want to have a better result than the goalless draw the managed in Stockholm in match day 3.
"We cannot lose more qualifiers. I hope that things run better," Ronaldo stated in 2008 before Portugal had to face Sweden away.
There are no other options indeed for Portugal but to avoid dropping points from now on.
But with determined opponents like Coach Lars Lagerback’s Sweden, who aims to lift the country’s flag after a miserable Euro 2008 tournament, the mission is far from being that easy.
The match, which should feature the likes of Inter Milan’s Ibrahimovic and of Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo, promises to be a cracker as both sides intend to kick start their qualifying campaign. Portugal and Sweden lie only third and fifth respectively with 5 points behind Denmark and Hungary.
