Euro 2008’s quarterfinalists the Netherlands will play hosts to Scotland on Saturday, March 28 as qualification for the World Cup in South Africa resumes in Europe.
Holland are one of the few teams that possess a 100% record so far. They top Group 9 with all possible points from three games, 5 points above second placed Scotland.
They’ve also conceded only one goal thanks to Van der Sar’s presence in their last two qualifiers. However, if the Oranje enjoyed two clean sheets against Iceland and Norway, they must now learn how to do without their 38 year old goalkeeper who has declined an offer from the manager.
After coming out from International retirement twice in his career, Van der Sar’s finally decided to end it for good. Unfortunately for the Dutch side, his refusal to play for his country will certainly affect Holland’s team spirit.
Asked about Van der Sar as a role model on FIFA.com last week, Coach Bert van Marwijk replied: “The national team is something that, metaphorically speaking, is owned by everybody. Edwin gave an outstanding example by showing his dedication when the team really needed him. In my opinion that's true love for and devotion to your country.
“Everybody involved with the national team, from the fans to the players and staff, should actually always have and show the same loyalty. Edwin showed that he is not only an outstanding goalie, but also a great personality.”
Marwijk consequently opted to call up Van der Sar ahead of Holland’s qualification games, but after keeper’s snub went public, the coach finally revealed to The Herald:
"Against my better judgment I called Edwin because of our present difficulties,"
"We had agreed the book was closed before we had these injuries and while I knew what the answer would be, I still called him.
"All our other keepers have a story to tell, sickness, injury or poor form but I will stick by Stekelenburg.
"He has the most potential of all of them and is the best available.
"He is not playing for Ajax, and that is a disadvantage, but this gives him a chance to prove that he can come back stronger."
Either way, the Netherlands are few steps away from sealing their place in the finals but even this great start in their campaign doesn’t carry the former Feyenoord boss away.
“We certainly won't underestimate them,” said Bert about Scotland.
“In the EURO 2008 qualifiers, they beat France twice. With France and Italy in the same group they did a great job, even though they ultimately didn't make it to the finals. Our players and staff won't take this match lightly.
“If Scotland win in Amsterdam, we will stay on top of Group 9, but they will narrow the gap and increase their play-off chances at the same time.”
Bert never won the World Cup as a player, but his dream of achieving this as a coach, burns like a flame within him.
“If we do succeed in reaching the finals, in my opinion you have to aim high and go for the utmost,”
Concerning Holland’s chances of winning the World Cup, Bert concluded:
“If I had the slightest idea that we could not win the World Cup, I would just stay at home.”
Holland will definitely go in for a win and even Coach George Burley’s strategy of filling experienced players rather than young talents may not be enough for Scotland to come out with something out when they clash against Holland on March 28.
