Colombia face Bolivia in Bogota on March 28 as the road to South Africa 2010 resumes in the CONMEBOL region.
However, Los Cafeteros can still build their faith on the memorable achievements they were able to manage against the likes of South America’s Giants Brazil and Argentina previously. Colombia started off their qualification campaign on a better note than one would have expected it, drawing goalless at home to the Dunga’s Samba Boys. They then went on to avoid Bolivia’s high altitude factor blight, repeating the 0-0 score line they had in their opening game, this time in La Paz.
A 1-0 win over Venezuela followed by a controversial 2-1 victory against the 2007 CONMEBOL beaten finalists Argentina took them up to 4th in the table at that point in time.
But two disappointing draws and three defeats on the trot against Uruguay, Chile and the leaders Paraguay saw them fall onto seventh in the table. Another goalless draw against Brazil in the second part of their qualification campaign helped them put an end to this torrid run of three consecutive defeats and boost their confidence before the break of the campaign.
Since then, Colombia have bounced back and managed to win the rest of their games which were friendlies against Nigeria and Haiti.
Things haven’t fared so well for the team that will be on the other side of the battle field on March 28. Bolivia lie second from bottom with five miserable defeats suffered in the hands of Uruguay, Argentina, Venezuela, Chile and Ecuador. Their best memory so far may be in 2008 when they beat current group leaders Paraguay 4-2 at the Hernando Siles Stadium to record their first win of the campaign. Bolivia might well want to get the better of Colombia after being held by Uruguay 2-2 in their last qualifier.
However, Los Cafeteros’ team morale has been boosted by impressive wins in their two friendly matches against Nigeria and Haiti respectively, which is not the case for Bolivia. La Verde have been deeply wounded after a 5-1 trashing in the hands of Sven’s Mexico when both met on March 11 for a friendly in the United States.
Perhaps will they be able to lift themselves up when they resume qualification to the World Cup with a trip to Bogota, who knows?
The interest here in the game comes from the fact that while Bolivia will set their minds on bouncing back from miserable campaign, Colombia will try to put an end to their disappointing home run by rubbing Bolivia’s wounds with salt.
Los Cafeteros have lost all their matches at the Nemesio Camacho Stadium since successively winning at home to Ecuador and Argentina in November 2007.
Will March 28 be the perfect date for the Colombians to break the curse that is on their home soil?
