Uruguay vs Paraguay Match Preview

UruguaySouth America’s group leaders Paraguay take on fourth placed Uruguay at the Centenario in Montevideo on March 28, where they’ll have the chance to extend their lead to 9 points at the top of the table before Argentina’s game to Venezuela hours later, and Brazil’s encounter away to Ecuador the day after.

Paraguay and Uruguay are the top two countries with the most goals in the qualification stage, with 18 and 19 goals respectively. But while the Paraguayans are enjoying the top spot in the group’s standing with 7 victories out of 10 games, Uruguay are struggling in fifth place with 10 points off the pace to clinch automatic tickets to the finals in South Africa.

Uruguay missed the chance on two occasions to go up to third in the standings after losing 2-1 in Argentina and drawing 2-2 in Bolivia back in October last year. A narrow 3-2 win against Libya back in February is their only victory in their last four games after drawing goalless in France in November.

On the other side, Paraguay are on a remarkable run of four consecutive victories, the last of which were 1-0 wins against Oman and Peru in friendlies.

However, if recent results give Paraguay the edge going into the game, history explain that picking up a clear favorite is harder than one may think.

Uruguay will hope to stretch their record of 27 wins and 100 goals against the Paraguayans in 67 meetings, while the Albirroja will aim to cut the margin of victories in the head to head to only one.

With 15 draws between themselves and an average of 2.8 goals per match, it’s easy to understand how tight it is when these two sides clash against each other.

Despite falling behind Uruguay in terms of historical advantage, Paraguay look to have turned things around quickly since suffering from an early exit in Germany three years ago. After starting the qualification on a strong note, Gerardo Martino hopes his side will keep the foot on the pedal until the end:

"We've already made important strides but we've still got the final step to take. That (final step) could come over our next four matches, which are the toughest ones in our run-in," once stated Paraguay’s Coach Gerardo Martino.

In Roque Santa Cruz, the Paraguayans possess an influential forward ready to tear up Uruguay’s deficient defense.
Analytically, the “traditional” play-offs winners – Uruguay – may only get a psychological boost ahead of the clash if only key players like Santa Cruz go missing in the Paraguayan line up through injury.

Talismanic number 10 Diego Forlan is an impressive front man for Uruguay though, but his work for the team is yet to count as the Celeste are often caught on the back by their opponents’’ attacking abilities.

It’s hard to predict the outcome of the game knowing that it could go either way.
