Mexico vs Costa Rica Match Preview

Sven’s Mexico to uplift themselves against Costa Rica after a recent poor run

With a bitter 2-0 loss suffered in the hands of their greatest rivals USA and with zero wins and no goals to celebrate this year, things look far from being comfortable in the camp of the Mexicans.

MexicoFormer Manchester City boss Sven Goran Eriksson has only one more chance (a friendly at home to Bolivia on March 11) to prepare Mexico before they face Costa Rica in a crucial encounter 17 days later.

El Tri were on a remarkable run of 6 consecutive wins in the qualification stages of the CONCACAF region but they now seem to have lost their sparkling form; A miserable record of two consecutive defeats to Honduras and the USA respectively tells it all.
After playing the first and only game so far in Round 4 of the qualification for South Africa 2010, Mexico lie at the bottom of the table; quite an embarrassing situation for a country like that that has managed a good number of 13 World Cup appearances in their entire history of football.

Mexico have an overwhelming historical advantage over the group’s leaders Costa Rica though, and Eriksson will hope that his side builds its confidence on the country’s strong head to head advantage and have it right one more time against La Sele.
However, Sven’s wish could be much harder to come true than one may think. Costa Rica have been successful throughout their qualification campaign, winning all of their games so far but the first – which ended in a 2-2 draw away to Grenada.

The greatest interest in the Mexico v Costa Rica clash here lies in the fact that while Sven Goran Eriksson’s Mexico will fight to bounce back from their defeat in the United States of America in February, Rodrigo Kenton’s Costa Rica will try to maintain their scintillating form and keep the top spot in the group.

Costa Rica have reached the World Cup finals only thrice – the last of these appearances being in 2002 and in 2006. La Sele might make it once again for the third consecutive time, and whereas a win on March 28 would put them a step closer to reaching South Africa 2010, defeat for Mexico will surmount the pressure on Coach Eriksson and his side.

Despite Costa Rica’s poor football history, Mexico’s recent unconvincing form makes it difficult to pick up a favorite ahead of the clash which takes place on March 28.

Analytically, El Tri should be boosted by the FA’s support for struggling Coach Sven Goran Eriksson.

"There's total support for Eriksson because we've a commitment with him to get to South Africa," said MFF president Justino Compean earlier in February, after Mexico’s 2-0 loss away to the USA.

Mexico’s task on March 28 will be to tear down Costa Rica’s flying wings, and the home factor should give them the advantage.
There is still hope for Sven’s Mexico to reach the World Cup finals. Even a third place finish in this final round of the North, Central America and Caribbean qualifiers will give them automatic tickets to South Africa 2010.
