Team NewsThomas Vermaelen returned from injury for the Gunners as did Jack Wilshere against Blackburn in the FA Cup. Aside from the injured Kieran Gibbs, Arsenal has no serious injury worries. Nacho Monreal, their new left back, is ineligible for Champions League play due to his time with Malaga.
For Bayern, Holger Badstuber is set to be out till the final part of the season. Jerome Boateng is suspended after collecting a needless red card in the final game of the group stages against BATE Borisov. Javier Martinez, who missed the weekend match against Wolfsburg, is set to return. Claudio Pizarro is staying in Munich as a precautionary measure due to a recent angina attack.
Arsenal comes into this match after a demoralizing defeat to Blackburn. They controlled the match but produced very little in the final third. The importance of Jack Wilshere showed, as without the influential Englishman, Arsenal just could not find a goal. Eventually, Blackburn capitalized on a defensive error from Arsenal and put the ball into the back of the net.
Going into this FA Cup match, Arsenal was in good form. They had won four matches and drawn just the one. They had not conceded in two games as they had tightened up at the back. However, Arsene Wenger needed a morale boosting win ahead of this tie.
Bayern, on the other hand, continued their silent march to the Bundesliga title. A 0-2 win over Wolfsburg kept their 15 point lead over second placed Borussia Dortmund intact. Bayern’s performance was not brilliant. However, they shut out Wolfsburg, in no small part due to a wonderful save from Manuel Neuer, and scored two at the other end.
Both teams play a similar brand of football. Bayern is arguably better though. They play a possession based style but have added pressing to their armory this season. They require minimum possession to cause damage now. Arsenal meanwhile has controlled possession more often than not but has not been able to break teams open as easily as Bayern has.
Arsenal will surely feel that they can trouble the Bayern back four. However, the addition of Dante has improved the defence. They have conceded only seven in the league. The Bavarians hardly have any weaknesses. Arsenal has conceded only once in the past three games. They had Nacho Monreal at the left back spot in recent matches. With Gibbs out, a question mark hangs on the left back spot. Will the Arsenal defence and midfield be able to keep Bayern at bay?
