El Clasico – Real Madrid v Barcelona: A battle of two giants beyond the mental strain of men.
The clash that is arguably the world’s most pressurizing, significant, fascinating and titanic battle in the world of football takes places on Saturday, May 2, at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Spain’s capital Madrid.
The tension ahead of this encounter has hugely mounted especially because of both teams’ last result in the Spanish Primera Liga. Barcelona could only manage a 2-2 draw at Valencia last weekend while Real Madrid overcame the might of rivals Sevilla in a dramatic 4-2 victory that kept Los Blancos as serious challengers for the league title. The Galacticos’ hands aren’t far from Barcelona’s reach now…
Real Madrid: The wounded giant that may come alive again
Real Madrid endured a lot of inconsistency, showing only a few flashes of their natural sparkling bright display until Bernd Schuster was ordered the sack. A weak Real Madrid side then succumbed to Barcelona’s ruthless authority when both clashed at the Camp Nou in what was Juande Ramos first match in charge. Since then, Los Blancos seem to have raised to life the spirit of war and bravery that is inspiring them to confront Barcelona’s invincible fortress. The reigning La Liga champions are facing the difficult task of retaining their crown against the likes of the team that is currently considered as Europe’s best. Los Blancos – who were more than 11 points behind Barcelona at a point in the season – now look set to reaffirm their glorious might just as the league campaign is coming to a close.
“We have managed to cut the lead down to just four points and next week, we play Barcelona at home and we will put our title aspirations on the line:” Real Madrid’s Juande Ramos.
Only four points separate Spain’s league leaders Barcelona from Real Madrid – who appear as the Blaugrana’s sole realistic challengers. But the Madridists could cut the most of the Catalans’ advantage when both battle it out at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday evening. Every single point has become precious for Real Madrid who can’t afford any more slip ups at this stage of the competition.
“We had won so many matches but we could not close the gap on Barca, and sometimes, it all seemed too much hard work:” Los Blancos manager after the Sevilla game.
Los Blancos remain in this insecure position where they must still pray that Barcelona lose ground in at least one of their next games in La Liga. And as long as the fact that Real and Barca finish the season locked up on the same number of points like two years ago remains a possibility, the head-to-head issue could come out as a very important factor.
After suffering a late 2-0 defeat in Barcelona’s mesmerizing temple, the Camp Nou, in the first part of the season, the Spanish Giants may opt to implore the spirit of May 7, 2008 when they humiliated their Catalan rivals by a thumping 4-1 triumph in Madrid. Such an emphatic score line will be very much needed this time round for Los Blancos to brush away the nightmare they endured at the Camp Nou earlier in the season.
Nevertheless, Pep Guardiola’s men are perhaps not out of breath yet… Their willingness to end a two-year drought by terminating the good path they laid since the start of the season this year burns like flames in their insatiable eyes.
Barcelona: We can’t lose ground this time!
The Blaugrana know all about their Madrid counterparts. These all-time foes have much to settle between them.
Barcelona failed to overpower Real Madrid in 2008 in the last stages of the league season at a point where Los Blancos’ lead at the top of the table was cut to only two points. However, in a way or another, Barcelona let away such a surprising gift only for Madrid to affirm their authority by clinching the title and finishing eighteen points clear above rivals Barcelona who had then astonishingly dropped unto third.
This may be an old story, but Coach Pep Guardiola – who is well aware of this kind of threat – will prefer to push his team with the forces of concentration and apprehension. Revenge at the Santiago Bernabeu… this is what Barcelona want.
“We can out-pass you and we can out-think you – that is our brand of football:” Barcelona’s Xavi Hernandez on his team’s potential.
Anything better than a defeat will uplift the Blaugrana’s spirit and put them a few steps away from their first Spanish league title since 2006. However, against a stubborn and determine side like Real Madrid, the task of realizing such a wish appears extremely tough despite the fact that Barcelona have managed to disgrace most of Spain’s and Europe’s big teams.
Real Madrid are hungry for success and desperate of ending this year with a bit of consolation. The Madridists were ousted from the Champions League by Liverpool in March after astonishingly being disqualified from the Copa del Rey by a non-La Liga side. It is time for the Men in White to quench their thirst by trouncing their number one foes Barcelona on home soil.
Even a victory though on Saturday may not give them the title but at least, a very much needed win that could steer them all the way to glory.
The Giants of the Spanish capital could grind three-quarters of Barcelona’s four-point advantage like fire melts ice when the two meet in Saturday’s El Clasico… a battle beyond the imagination of men.
