UEFA Champions League titleholders Chelsea are on the brink of clinching Last 16 tickets for the 11th year in a row. However, their upcoming opponents – Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine – also have strong aspirations.
After holding off Juventus to a draw in Italy, the Miners would think they can do better on home soil. The Donbass Arena – where England claimed a controversial victory over Ukraine during Euro 2012 – should offer Shakhtar Donetsk the amount of comfort needed to face Europe’s champions, Chelsea.
This season, Shakhtar Donetsk are very strong. Only a top two finish in the group stages guarantees passage to the Last 16. With that in mind, Shakhtar are determined to resist the challenge of Juventus who currently occupy the third spot in Group E.
A positive result against Chelsea is what Mircea Lucescu’s men need to achieve their goal. As of now, things look good for the Ukrainians who would gladly avoid demotion to the UEFA Europa League.
However, Chelsea are in fine form. They have won each of their last six matches and remain unbeaten in all competitions. The Blues will be looking to build on their 4-2 defeat of Spurs in the English Premier League last Saturday. A win may not come easy but momentum and experience may play the trick for Di Matteo’s side.
