Sampdoria may find themselves in 14th-position of the Serie A standings, with barely 20 points from 19 games, but their recent 2-1 win over league leaders Juventus in Turin last weekend suggests that they are on the right road to recovery.
La Samp, who beat Juventus courtesy of two goals from talented Argentine youngster Emanuel Icardi, will be hoping to cause another major upset when they play hosts to AC Milan at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris in Genoa.
Another three points would be crucial for the side, as it would surely boost their confidence a great deal, considering that they still remain close to the relegation zone, just nine points ahead of bottom-placed Siena.
Sampdoria coach Delio Rosi is expected to make just one change to the side that overcame Juventus. Gaetano Berardi received his marching orders in that game, and will likely be replaced by Lorenzo De Silvestri. Rossi will be hoping for a repeat performance by Icardi and equally dangerous strike-partner Eder.
Milan, meanwhile, come into the clash on a down after having been eliminated from the Coppa Italia at the hands of bitter rivals Juventus. After another major setback for the Rossoneri, coach Massimiliano Allegri will surely make a number of changes to his side, with Urby Emanuelson, Massimo Ambrosini, Francesco Acerbi and Marco Amelia all expected to drop to the bench.
Following unsuccessful negotiations to return to Brazil, with former club Santos having an offer turned down by Milan, Robinho is set to reappear in attack alongside the impressive Stephan El Shaarawy.
Milan, who lie in 7th-position of the Serie A, are well aware of the fact that if they fail to beat teams like Sampdoria their chances of qualifying for European competition next season will soon fade away.
