AnalysisReal Madrid are not where they wished they would be before the Christmas break in Spain. With 11 points off the pace, they must beat Espanyol at all cost and hope Barcelona drop points at home to Atletico Madrid in Sunday’s very last La Liga fixture.
At the Santiago Bernabeu, Los Blancos have been just as good as their Blaugrana rivals with six wins and one draw in seven matches. What has cost Jose Mourinho and his men dearly is their form away from home. While Spanish Primera Division leaders Barcelona have won the totality of their games out of the Camp Nou, third-placed Real Madrid have suffered three defeats.
After losing to Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey in midweek, Real Madrid cannot allow themselves to make no use of their home advantage against Espanyol. As of now, the La Liga champions are in the news – and not for very good reasons. Speculations have linked key player Cristiano Ronaldo and coach Jose Mourinho with an exit from the Spanish capital as the team struggles with inconsistency on the pitch in all competitions this season.
The only way Los Blancos can tone the pressure down is by making sure they do not completely give away their league title. Victory against a club like Espanyol – sandwiched in 18th place between Granada and Deportivo – is a must for Real Madrid.
• The last time Espanyol scored against Real Madrid was on October 5, 2008. Raul Tamudo and Luis Garcia netted a goal each but living legend Raul Gonzalez clinched a brace to rescue a point for hosts Real Madrid. This result however saw a nine-game winning streak come to an end for Los Blancos.
• Espanyol have won only one away fixture in La Liga this season. That was against Real Sociedad thanks to a 77th minute goal from Diego Colotto.
• The last four matches between Real Madrid and Espanyol have produced four red cards equally split.
• Real Madrid have netted 11 goals in their last three home games against Espanyol in La Liga.
• Real Madrid have not conceded a goal against Espanyol in seven matches.
• Real Madrid have won 35 of their 38 fixtures at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Spanish Primera Division.
