Team NewsCesare Prandelli will make a number of changes to his side since they were beaten by Uruguay in their latest friendly match. The Azzurri will have quite a face-lift, as Andrea Barzagli and Domenico Criscito will replace Andrea Ranocchia and Federico Balzaretti in defense and Antonio Nocerino will receive the nod ahead of Claudio Marchisio in the midfield, where he will play alongside Andrea Pirlo and Daniele De Rossi.
Italy’s attacking formation will also be changed, as Alessandro Matri and Giampaolo Pazzini will replace Mario Balotelli and Pablo Osvaldo, after the previous strike partnership failed to impress against the Uruguayans.
Meanwhile, Jurgen Klinsmann, the coach of the United States, could make up to seven changes from the side that picked up a win in their last match against Panama. Players that are expected to return to the starting eleven include regulars Tim Howard, Steven Cherundolo and Carlos Bocanegra. While in the absence of star striker Landon Donovan, who is struggling with bronchitis, Klinsmann has surprised many in opting for a three-man attack comprising of Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore and local-based 21-year-old striker Brek Shea.
Italy come into the game after having suffered a 1-0 defeat to South American champions Uruguay at the Stadio Olimpico of Rome last November. The loss brought an end to a run of four wins in five games for the four-time world champions.
The United States, on the other hand, come into the clash with three successive victories under their belt, against Panama, Venezuela and Slovenia. However, before their winning streak commenced they had suffered successive 1-0 defeats against much more difficult teams in France and Ecuador.
Matri - The striker hasn’t always been a regular with Juventus, not to mention with his national team, but a series of good displays with the Bianconeri have cemented himself a place in the starting eleven, and he will be hoping to take full advantage of the opportunity by finding the back of the net.
Howard - The Everton goalkeeper is expected to be a very busy man on Wednesday, and will set out on a mission to frustrate the Italians by keeping a clean sheet. His leadership skills will be vital for the United State’s chances of picking up a positive result.
The fact that Italy will face difficult opposition in defending champions Spain, as well as Croatia and the Republic of Ireland in their Euro 2012 group, means that they must brush aside a team like the USA to stand a chance. The Azzurri count with a talented squad that are more than capable of doing this.
The Verdict:
Italy 3-1 USA
