Barcelona vs Real Madrid Match Preview
So much is at stake for both Barcelona and Real Madrid ahead of the second leg of the Copa del Rey quarterfinals. Who will win this version of El Clasico?

Will Real Madrid strangle Barcelona at the Camp Nou to eventually reach the Copa del Rey's semifinal stage?
What the public must remember is that a 1-0 victory won’t be enough for Real Madrid to progress into the semifinals of the Spanish cup. The competition’s titleholders have to turn the tables around as they carry the wounds of a 2-1 deficit.
Barcelona are favorites to finish off Real Madrid. The Camp Nou stadium is where they lifted the 2011 Spanish Supercopa trophy last summer. It is also where they recorded a historic and humiliating 5-0 triumph over Real Madrid en route to the 2010/11 Spanish La Liga title.
The Catalans virtually have one foot in the semifinals of the Copa del Rey. Many even think that Barca are already through to the next stage; they view the second leg on Wednesday night as nothing but a 90-minute period for Barcelona to make their semifinal qualification official.
Andres Iniesta, however, is getting ready for a rather difficult game.
“Madrid will force us to put in a perfect game. We can't afford any relaxation. The only thing I want is that the team put in a good performance,” the midfielder said during the pre-match press conference.
“We'll go out to win. If we were to just try and hold on for a draw, be afraid of losing, we would have a lot of problems because Madrid will come here to win and they have the players who can do that.”
This is an interesting comment from Iniesta. How many teams actually go to the Camp Nou to win and how many teams succeed when trying to win at the Camp Nou? Barcelona gathered over 70% of the ball in the first leg of this Copa del Rey tie. It’s hard to see Real Madrid defying the odds by dominating the Catalans on Wednesday night.
Jose Mourinho’s plan, centered around the idea of playing Pepe in midfield, didn’t quite work out at the Bernabeu. Instead, the Portuguese defender tarnished the game with his terrible stomp on the left hand of Lionel Messi. “Unless he wants to experience another episode like Figo, it would be better if he [Pepe] didn't come,” ex-Barca manager Carles Rexach told El Mundo Deportivo in the buildup to January 25's match.
But Jose Mourinho doesn’t want to get carried away by all the criticism aimed at his player. Commenting on his squad choice for El Clasico at the Camp Nou, the Special One told the press on Tuesday:
“If Pepe is fit, then he will play. There are question marks over him, Granero and Lass, all whom are having some troubles, but tomorrow we will train and I will decide whether they are able to play.
“I have no idea about my starting XI yet. I have many decisions to make over certain players, so many questions are still unanswered. As in the first game, I had doubts until the end, and the same will happen tomorrow.
“I will not answer [any question related to what team I will pick]. I'm the coach and I do not have to explain what approach I choose publicly.”
What are Los Blancos plotting? There has been a lot of talks in the media concerning the unity of their squad lately. It has been claimed, by the Spanish media, that Real Madrid’s dressing room is divided as Mourinho reportedly favors Portuguese players over the Spaniards.
These rumors have fuelled the thought that Barcelona vs Real Madrid will have a major impact on Mourinho’s career at the Bernabeu. This, however, is something that the Special One has categorically refuted. Downplaying the meaning of this titanic fixture and defending the strength of the Spanish giants, Mourinho declared:
“We have five points more than the team that everyone thinks is the best in the world. It is because we are not doing as badly and have as many problems as people think we have. When I came here, the club had a tradition of being eliminated from the Copa del Rey by teams from the lower divisions.
“When I arrived, we were not seeded in the Champions League and now we have the record for most wins in the group stage. I seem to have so many problems. This game does not mark a before and after in my career.”
Finally, the biggest concern ahead of El Clasico on January 25 is crowd violence. For the love of football and for the image of Barcelona, coach Pep Guardiola has urged fervent home supporters to behave despite the Pepe-Messi issue.
“Let us leave Pepe alone. If his coach wants him to play, then let him play and I hope this will be the best possible thing for everyone,” Guardiola was quoted as saying by reporters.
“I hope that what happened with [Luis] Figo will not be repeated because the club's fans regret what happened. If it happens again, it means we have not learned anything and that we are not the club we have to be. It would hurt more than to be eliminated.”
Football fans are hoping to see a great game, where both teams will try to fight until death. No one wants a Clasico that would stay in history for ugly reasons…
Guardiola has chosen Dos Santos, Cuenca and Sergi Roberto to join his available 16-man squad. Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, recalled Sergio Ramos to train with the rest of the Real Madrid team. There will be last-minute team news from both Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Barcelona vs Real Madrid Match Report
Copa del Rey champions Real Madrid are out of the competition. They lost 4-3 to Barcelona in the quarterfinals over the two legs.

Real Madrid did all they could but Barcelona still won El Clasico at the Camp Nou.
A couple of glorious opportunities fell to Higuain but the Argentine failed to take them. Barcelona finally punished Pipita and team mates through late first-half goals from Pedro and Dani Alves. At the break, it seemed like Real Madrid had suddenly lost all hopes of reaching the Copa del Rey semifinals.
However, their approach in the second period showed the brave side of Los Blancos. Kaka and Higuain went off for Callejon and Benzema before Cristiano Ronaldo pulled a goal back in the 68th minute. Substitute Benzema did what Higuain couldn’t do as he leveled the match at 2-2.
In the end, Real Madrid should found immense confidence and pride from this game. Kaka and Mesut Özil were influential in midfield. Cristiano Ronaldo had a great match and produced a complete performance. Chances were created but more should have been taken.
In terms of controversy, Sergio Ramos' goal was strangely disallowed for an alleged foul on Dani Alves in the buildup. Real Madrid got three genuine appeals for a penalty turned down while Lassana Diarra surely should have been sent off in the first period of the game. Sergio Ramos received a controversial red card in the very last moment only to distract Real Madrid’s fight for a dramatic winner in El Clasico.
