Peñarol vs Rampla Juniors Match Report
Penarol moved into second-place of the Apertura championship, after thrashing Rampla Juniors 4-1 at the Centenario stadium on Saturday. Penarol still have an outside chance of winning the league, but they must hope that Nacional drop points against Liverpool next week.
Having lost 2-1 to Nacional in the Uruguayan superclasico last week, Penarol knew that the three points were essential to stay in the title hunt. They went into the break with a two-goal advantage after goals from Alejandro Gonzalez in the 35th minute and from Marcelo Zalayeta in the 42nd minute.
Penarol, who were losing finalists of the 2011 Copa Libertadores, continued to dominate their opponents, adding their third goal through captain Dario Rodriguez in the 64th minute. Rampla, who were on the verge of losing their 9th match of the season, pulled a goal back through Paul Dzeruvs, however, six minutes later Zalayeta restored Penarol's advantage, to give the Uruguayan giants a big win.
