Vasco Da Gama vs Universitario Match Preview
Vasco da Gama may have surrendered first-place of the Brazilian championship to Corinthians on Sunday, but as well as being in contention for the title on the domestic front, they are one of the favourites to win the Copa Sudamericana.Vasco, who slaughtered Aurora of Bolivia 8-3 to reach the quarter-finals, travel to Peru to face a tricky Universitario de Deportes side. Vasco contain a wealth of talent in their attack, as was in clear evidence last week, however, their defense looks rather vulnerable.
In order to return to Brazil with a positive result from Lima, Vasco must sort out their problems at the back, because Universitario are ruthless when presented with a goal-scoring opportunity.
Despite the fact that Vasco come into the tie as the favourites, Universitario defender Jesus Rabanal affirmed that his side are not afraid of the Brazilians.
"They don't scare us. They will be complicated rivals, like all Brazilian teams. We have to be alert throughout the duration of the ninety minutes to claim a positive result that would allow us to go to Brazil more calmly. That is the idea," said Rabanal.

Vasco da Gama turned around a 2-0 deficit from the first leg in Lima by crushing Universitario de Deportes 5-2 to advance to the semi-finals of the Copa Sudamericana in dramatic fashion. Now Vasco will have to wait for the conclusion of the return leg between Universidad de Chile and Arsenal de Sarandi next week in order to find out their semi-final opponents.In a match that saw three players sent-off, two from the Peruvians, once again the firepower of the Vasco da Gama offense proved the difference at the Sao Januario stadium. As was the case against Aurora of Bolivia in the previous round, Vasco turned around the tie and crushed a Universitario that was winning 2-1 in the 47th minute.
Diego Souza put Vasco ahead when he fired home a penalty kick in the 23rd minute, however, their joy lasted only eleven minutes as Raul Ruidiaz put the visitors on level terms when he finished off a swift counterattack. Both teams, particularly the Brazilians, looked very nervous and it was no surprise that a player from each side was sent-off during a brief half-time brawl.
Two minutes into the second half, Jesus Rabanal beat Vasco goalkeeper Fernando with a long-range drive from a corner, to give the Peruvians a 4-1 advantage over the two legs. It appeared that the goal had more than settled the tie in favour of Universitario and made it mission impossible for the Brazilians. However, Vasco had different ideas with Elton scoring immediately and Dede adding another goal nine minutes later, before Rabanal reduced the Peruvians to nine-men in the 61st minute.
With the numerical advantage, Vasco pushed forward in numbers as they needed a further two goals to advance to the semi-finals. Dede, who practically switched from defense to attack put Vasco one goal away from qualification when he scored a header from a Alan cross in the 72nd minute. To the ecstasy of the home fans it was Dede who provided Alecsandro with a perfect assist to send Vasco dramatically into the final four of the Copa Sudamericana ten minutes from full-time.
