APOEL vs FC Porto Match Preview
It’s do or die for FC Porto tonight in their Champions League match away at APOEL Nicosia.

Hulk reacted angrily to being substituted in Porto’s last match
The Cypriots have been a sensation in Group G, and lead the section at the halfway stage after starting out as rank outsiders.
APOEL fully deserved the point they got in the 1-1 at the Estádio do Dragão a fortnight ago. Indeed, only a last-minute save from Porto’s Brazilian goalkeeper Helton prevented a first ever win for a Cypriot team over a Portuguese side.
In stark contrast Porto have been disappointing so far in this season’s edition of the world’s greatest club competition. Failure to win tomorrow will put qualification from the section at serious risk.
Porto coach Vítor Pereira reacted to the colorless performance in the first match with a shake-up in his squad, dropping and/or substituting the likes of João Moutinho, James Rodríguez and Hulk in the two subsequent Liga ZON Sagres games. The changes brought the desired results, with 5-0 (vs. Nacional) and 3-0 (vs. Paços de Ferreira) victories likely to have restored confidence among the Portuguese champions.
“FC Porto is coming off two big victories. Victories bring confidence and I believe we are ready for this game. We’ve come here with the clear objective of winning the match,” said Pereira.
Much interest will focus on the individual performance of Porto’s star man Hulk. The Brazilian striker was substituted in Friday’s win over Paços, and reacted poorly by running straight down the tunnel without acknowledging his team-mates or the coaching staff, only to apologize immediately after the final whistle had blown.
“There is absolutely no problem with Hulk. He was annoyed with his own performance, and I expect him to give a strong response here,” said Pereira. In other team news Porto right-back Fucile returns to the squad after serving a one-match suspension.
APOEL have three Portuguese players in their squad, one of whom is former Chelsea midfielder Bruno Morais. The 27-year-old insists that despite his team’s lofty position, it is the Portuguese team who remain the most likely to finish top of the group.
“FC Porto are still favorites for first place in the group, because they have a strongest squad. Our team likes playing at home, as we have a fantastic public who give us their full backing, but I don’t think that is a point in our favor, given that we are facing experienced opponents. FC Porto have a lot of quality and play well in difficult atmospheres,” said Morais.
Kick-off at the GSP Stadium at 9.45pm local time.
APOEL vs FC Porto Match Report
APOEL continued their sensational Champions League campaign by beating FC Porto at home to remain on course for a place in the last sixteen.
The defeat leaves FC Porto's Champions League hopes hanging by a thread. The Dragons need to win away at Shakhtar Donetsk then beat Zenit St. Petersburg at home by at least two clear goals to make progress in the competition.
APOEL were good value for their victory. The forward trio of Manduca, Ailton and Trickovski caused Porto's defence problems all night with their strong running and clever interchanges.
The attitude of Porto's players cannot be faulted, but for all their efforts, the team looked clean out of ideas, and a shadow of the side that swept all before them last season.
A combination of Porto goalkeeper Helton and post denied Ailton the opener in the 20th minute. The same player won and converted a penalty shortly before the interval.
Porto enjoyed the lion's share of possession in the 2nd half, but had to wait until the 88th minute for an equaliser, with Hulk scoring, again from the penalty spot.
However, ex Benfica player Manduca scored a dramatic winner in stoppage time to the delight of the ecstatic home crowd.
