DC United vs Portland Timbers Match Preview

D.C. United will play host to the Portland Timbers on Wednesday with the playoff hopes of both teams on the line.

Portland are three points behind the final wildcard spot having played one game less than the 10th placed New York Red Bulls. United are two points further back, and must win both of their remaining games to stand a chance of playoff qualification.

Branko Boskovic, Chris Pontius and Jed Zayner are sidelined with injury for United, while Dejan Jakovic should be fit to play.

Striker Charlie Davies is healthy but was restricted to a role off the bench in last weekend’s 2-1 loss to the Chicago Fire.

A disgruntled Davies spoke to the official MLS website about his frustration over playing time. “I’m physically fine, I can only do so much with the time that I have. I’m a guy that expects to play 90 minutes,” said the USA international striker. “I’m fit, I’m healthy, and it’s disappointing when you want to get the playing time to help the team win, and you only get 20, 15 minutes. I’ve done all I can do.”

The Timbers have a lengthy injury list that includes Adin Brown, Kevin Goldthwaite and Eddie Johnson. Darlington Nagbe, Spencer Thompson and Sal Zizzo are also ruled out.

Midfielder Jack Jewsbury will be a key presence for the Timbers, having registered seven goals and eight assists so far this season.
