Benfica vs FC Porto Match Preview

Tom Kundert, Mar 1st 2012
Bitter rivals Benfica and FC Porto go head to head in Lisbon tomorrow in a match that could go a long way to deciding who becomes Portuguese champions in 2011/12.

Friday’s Benfica versus Porto clássico promises to be something special
Two weeks ago Benfica looked to be on course for the title. Unbeaten at the time in the Liga ZON Sagres, the Eagles enjoyed a five-point cushion over their fierce rivals from the north.

But a defeat (against Vitoria Guimaraes) and a draw (against Académica), combined with two Porto wins wiped off that advantage, meaning that both sides are dead level on points going into the clash.

Indeed, Porto may feel a psychological advantage, having obtained two victories at the Estádio da Luz last season. Benfica coach Jorge Jesus does not see it that way.

“I don’t think my players will be emotionally affected by what happened last season. We are concerned about the present only. We are in joint first. We work every day with the aim of winning the title,” said Jesus.

The hosts have been boosted by the return of key Spanish midfielder Javi García. But Argentine centre-back Garay faces a late fitness test after picking up a knock on his left knee in Argentina’s midweek victory in Switzerland.

As for Porto, coach Vítor Pereira has drafted in Argentine starlet into the squad. Much was expected of the teenager dubbed “the new Messi” but Iturbe has had scant opportunity to show what he can do this season.

Brazilian striker Kléber also comes back into the squad, although the central striker role will undoubtedly be filled by Austrian marksman Marc Janko, fresh from scoring in midweek in his nation’s win over Finland. Winger Silvestre Varela missed the game with a thigh strain.

“I can’t say if this game is going to be decisive because I haven’t got a crystal ball and there are still lots of matches left in the season, but there is no doubt it is an extremely important one,” said Pereira. “We are confident and will be aiming to bring the three points back to Porto.”

Kick-off at 8.15 pm local time at the Estadio da Luz, Lisbon.

Benfica vs FC Porto Match Report

Tom Kundert, Mar 3rd 2012
A thrilling clássico in Lisbon on Friday night went FC Porto's way to give the Dragons a three-point advantage of rivals Benfica as the championship race moves into the home straight.
Perhaps we should have known we were in for something special from the moment Hulk cut in from the right flank and unleased a venemous strike that only changed direction once it had flown into the top corner and hit the back of the Benfica net.

Seven minutes were on the clock and the lead rewarded Porto's early dominance.

But Benfica gradually came back and began exerting heavy pressure. Cardozo and Aimar missed good opportunities, before the Paraguayan striker took advantage of a loose ball in the box to hammer in the equaliser for Benfica just before half time.

The vast majority of huge crowd at the Estádio da Luz exploded in delight two minutes after the break as Cardozo headed in Aimar's precise free kick to give Benfica the lead.

The hosts were well on top at this stage but failed to score a third goal and the Reds were stunned when Porto scored an excellent equaliser through substitute James Rodríguez.

Things soon got worse for Benfica as Emerson was sent off for picking up a second yellow card after fouling Hulk.

Maicon's late header gave the Porto what could prove a vital win. The big centre-back headed in a James free-kick, although TV replays showed the goal should have been ruled out for offside.

Porto will not complain as they sneak ahead in the race to secure the 2011/12 Liga ZON Sagres crown.
