Benfica vs Sporting CP Lisbon Match Preview

Tom Kundert, Nov 25th 2011
The Portuguese capital will come to a standstill on Saturday night as Benfica take on Sporting in what promises to be one of the most exciting Lisbon derbies for many a year.
The Estadio da Luz will be packed with over 60,000 fiercely passionate fans

Playing at home, Benfica will start favorites for a number of reasons. Firstly, the Eagles are yet to taste defeat in 21 games this season. Secondly, Benfica have had a clear ascendancy over their local rivals when playing at home for a number years, not losing since 2006 and winning the last four encounters.

Thirdly, Jorge Jesus’ men come into the game on a high, having earned a draw in impressive fashion against Manchester United at Old Trafford Tuesday, in so doing guaranteeing progress to the knockout phase of the Champions League.

“Benfica are in good form and we want to play at the same level we showed in Manchester. We are confident. I expect Sporting to play on the counter-attack, but we will be ready for this,” said Jesus.

The Reds have been further boosted by the news that captain Luisão has a good chance of recovering from the thigh injury he picked up in England. The influential centre-back will take a late fitness test.

Sporting also go into the match with confidence sky-high. The Lions have won 12 of their last 13 matches and have been playing some sparkling football in recent weeks.

Domingos Paciência has molded a completely new set of players into a solid team in double quick time, and Sporting currently lie just one point behind joint leaders FC Porto and Benfica in the standings.

“We are going to try and do what we have been doing lately. If we do, then we will be close to obtaining a victory,” said Domingos. “But nobody will win the championship after this game. Regardless of the result we will keeping working hard to accumulate points.”

Sporting still cannot count on the unfit centre-back Alberto Rodriguez or winger Jeffren, in addition to long-term injury victims Fito Rinaudo and Marat Izmailov. Domingos is likely to repeat the same line-up that knocked Braga out of the Portuguese Cup last weekend.

Kick-off at 8.15 pm local time at the Estadio da Luz, Lisbon.

Benfica vs Sporting CP Lisbon Match Report

Tom Kundert, Nov 26th 2011
A first-half Javi Garcia goal proved the winner as Benfica beat Sporting 1-0 in the Lisbon derby on Saturday night.
The tone was set for an entertaining match in opening 15 minutes. Duch pair Wolfswinkel and Schaars both came close to giving Sporting the lead, but in between a wondrous volley by Benfica midfielder Gaitan thudded off the post with Patrício in the Sporting goal beaten.

An evenly contested game drew plenty of yellow cards, as is the norm in Lisbon derbies, but there was also plenty of good football on show from both sides, with Benfica's Aimar especially catching the eye with superb midfield play.

Benfica took the lead shortly before half time as Javi Garcia rose highest to send a powerful header into the back of the net from a corner.

Sporting continued to beleive, even more so when Oscar Cardozo was sent off just after the hour mark for a second yellow card after protesting too vociferously with the referee.

Elias had two good chances to grab an equaliser, but Benfica held on for the three points that keeps them top of the table.
