The 1-0 setback was compounded by the loss of midfield anchorman Fito Rinaudo. The Argentine fractured his ankle and will be out of action for around three months. Rinaudo joins Izmailov, Onyewu, Insua and Jeffren on a worryingly long injury list. Doubts also surround the fitness of centre-back Alberto Rodriguez and striker Bojinov.

Nevertheless, the Lions will be confident of victory against a Leiria side struggling in the lower reaches of the table. “We have enough players to get over this problem, although we are disappointed when injuries appear, especially a bad one like in Rinaudo’s case,” said Sporting coach Domingos Paciência.

“But now we have to think about the game against Leiria and concentrate on obtaining another victory. We are not as deprived as it may seem.”

Should Sporting clock up a seventh consecutive victory in the Liga ZON Sagres the Lisbon club could move to within one point of the leaders, depending on Benfica’s result in Braga earlier in the day.

Leiria are yet to draw a match in 2011/12, having lost eight and won three of their matches so far.

And coach Manuel Cajuda does not believe Sporting will be adversely affected by their injuries. “Sporting have quality options to replace their injured players. They are a powerful team that are in great form,” said the veteran coach.

Kick-off at the Alvalade stadium at 8.15pm local time.
