FC Porto vs Benfica Match Preview

Angela Asante, Sep 22nd 2011
There will be no special plan to stop FC Porto’s Hulk according to Benfica’s Jorge Jesus. Both the Eagles and the Dragons are focused on getting the three points on Friday night.

“Our motivation ahead of this classic is normal. It will be a great game between two highly talented teams. We respect FC Porto as we respect all opponents, but we are going there with confident and convinced that we can clinch three more points.”

Jorge Jesus is certainly not dreaming too much. Unlike it seemed last season, Benfica appear to have better reasons to believe in their potential this term.

Forget about the Eagles’ 5-0 defeat at the Estadio do Dragao. Even FC Porto’s vice president isn’t expecting a cricket score line on match-day 6 of the Liga Sagres.

“What matters is to win. 1-0 will be enough because getting the three points is what is at stake. The number of goals will be secondary,” he stated according to Abola.pt.

On Friday, that venue will feature two teams “starting on equal terms, with the same number of points” as Jorge Jesus noted at the press conference. What takes off the pressure from both teams is that none of them sees Friday’s encounter as a decisive one.

“Regardless of the outcome, there will still be plenty games left in the championship,” Porto’s vice president believes. “La Liga is not easy and, with the European competition, there will be overload of games that could have influence.”

For Jorge Jesus, Benfica’s past defeats to FC Porto will have no impact on Friday night’s encounter. The Eagles have shown their strength with 4 victories and 1 draw in 5 games thus far. They also portrayed a good image of themselves during their Champions League group opener against Manchester United.

“This game has only three points at stake and won’t define anything about the future,” Jesus declared despite acknowledging that “the winner will get into a stronger position”. Ahead of FC Porto vs Benfica, the Eagles stand as the team having scored the most number of goals. The Dragons follow closely behind with 12 goals in 5 matches.
