Espanyol vs Barcelona Match Preview
Barcelona’s quest for the top spot in La Liga continues on Sunday when they face Espanyol at the Cornella El Prat in the highly anticipated Catalan derby.

Espanyol will do their best to contain Barcelona despite their injuries.
After being named the best club coach in the world for the second consecutive time, Pep Guardiola can aim for another achievement against his city rivals. According to the International Federation of Football History & Statistics, Guardiola received 201 points in the survey, while Jose Mourinho came second with 112 points and Sir Alex Ferguson came third with 107 points.
But this weekend, Guardiola can prove why he is the best in the business, with what could be a historic triumph against Espanyol. Indeed, if ever Real Madrid were to lose their game against Granada on Saturday evening, then Barcelona could steal the pole position and lead the table on goal difference for as long as they can.
Yet, Espanyol also have good reasons to win. Depending on the results of Osasuna, Sevilla and Malaga this weekend, three points could be enough to send the Blanquiblaus up into the UEFA Europa League zone. Thinking of catching up their challengers Barcelona is apparently not Espanyol’s target at the moment, knowing that a 14-point gap currently separates them.
The defending Liga champions will be setting their eyes on the dangerous trio formed by Raul Baena, Joan Verdu and Sergio Garcia - all former players at La Masia. Luckily for the Club World Cup winners though, Baena may start on the bench due to a left quadriceps injury; and somehow, it appears there is more trouble affecting the Espanyol line-up.
Although Carlos Kameni is back in the squad, Walter Pandiani is affected with a sore thigh muscle. Javi Lopez has a bruised left fibula, while Juan Albin has yet to be released from his right abdominal muscle problem.
For Barcelona, Ibrahim Afellay and David Villa will be missing, but Andres Iniesta is expected to make his league return after returning to training earlier this week.
Espanyol vs Barcelona Match Report
With Real Madrid demolishing Granada 5-1 on Saturday night, Barcelona needed nothing less than 3 points against Espanyol to keep the pressure on their rivals.

A solid Espanyol side denied Barcelona the three points...
Los Cules wasted no time in imposing themselves through their usual passing game. Espanyol however fired first, with Joan Verdu twice testing the Barca defence in a single intense moment.
At their turn, the hosts attempted to keep possession and control the game; but they suffered a scare on 13 minutes when Messi set up Fabregas for the opener - only to see the referee rule out the goal for handball. It was eventually a yellow card for Messi, but Barcelona quickly responded with a clean goal on 16 minutes, again from Cesc Fabregas.
A powerful header from the Spaniard following an assist from Dani Alves was enough to give the visitors the lead; yet, Alvarez could blame himself for bad goalkeeping. Both sides afterward tried to pressure each other; but somehow, it was the FIFA Club World Cup winners who seemed to be on top of the game.
The result remained unchanged at half time, leaving Espanyol wondering how they allowed themselves to be a goal down. The home side showed real strength at the back and determination in their counter attacks, but perhaps, possession was lacking.
The situation didn’t change much early in the second period. At the disappointment of the home crowd, Dani Alves beat Alvarez to net Barcelona’s second goal of the night before the hour mark. There were signs of relief though when the referee again cancelled the goal - this time, for offside.
Frustration then took over the Espanyol camp, but five minutes before normal time, they were the ones celebrating. A crucial header from Alvaro turned out to be the hosts’ long-awaited equalizer.
Late in the game, Jordi Amat, Juan Daniel Forlin, Kiko Casilla and Hector Alfredo Moreno all entered the book. Regardless, the game ended as a draw.
In the long run, if a team had to be proud of the result, then it had to be Espanyol. As for Barcelona, concerns now arise over their race for La Liga title. Two more points dropped against their city rivals means nothing but more hard work on the way for Pep Guardiola’s side.
