Barcelona vs Villarreal Match Preview
Villarreal have the opportunity to embarrass Barcelona at the Camp Nou on the first match-day of the 2011/12 La Liga season.

Barcelona are poised to find the target more than once against Villarreal on Monday night.
However, the Catalans are in formidable form. Their latest performance, which was in the 2011 UEFA Super Cup encounter against FC Porto, arguably didn’t portray the best of Barcelona.
Still, they managed to produce the result needed to clinch success. Recently, rival manager Jose Mourinho said about Pep Guardiola’s team in an interview with Spanish news source Marca:
“One thing that never changes is they always win whether they play good or bad. I do not think that this will change.”
Whatever the “Special One” meant through his comment, the majority of football fans and analysts have tipped Barcelona to defend their Splanish Primera Division title with a 2011/12 La Liga victory in their debut match. However, having played 4 matches within the past couple of weeks, the Catalans may not tune the tempo very high against the Yellow Submarines.
Already, Adriano’s exclusion from the clash has been confirmed through the team’s doctors. The Brazilian picked up a muscle strain against FC Porto last Friday and will eventually not recover in time for Monday night’s titanic Barcelona vs Villarreal La Liga match.
Meanwhile, the home crowd may see Puyol in action for at least a few minutes. On Saturday, the defensive rock reportedly went through a full training session for the first time since his knee surgery in June.
As for Dani Alves, he will have to back his team mates from afar; he is suspended for the game following a yellow card he picked up against Malaga on Match-day 38 last season.
So Villarreal are not ruling out their chances of imposing their game at the Camp Nou. Midfielder Javier Camunas communicated the Yellow Submarines’ ambition in an interview with Sport, stating:
“We know it will be difficult, but we can do it. In the first game you don't know whether it is better to play Barcelona.
“But we know that in the past they have failed on day one of the championship, and so we are hoping to repeat this.”
Will Villarreal hand Barcelona their first home debut defeat in 72 years?
Note that Villarreal lost 3-1 the last time they faced Barcelona away from home in La Liga. But in their most recent game, they overcame an upset by defeating Denmark’s Odense 3-1 on aggregate to reach the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League’s group stages.
Barcelona vs Villarreal Match Report
Barcelona 5-0 Villarreal; Messi and Fabregas starred again. Only one goal puts the Catalans behind Sunday’s 6-0 winners Real Madrid in La Liga standings after Match-day 1.

Barcelona remain united and strong. They've justed trounced Villarreal 5-0.
Barcelona took the lead after 25 minutes through Thiago Alcantara. Cesc Fabregas had come very close to breaking the deadlock a couple of minutes before, but the ex-Arsenal captain was rather meant to provide an assist for Thiago’s opener. It was a smashing goal—the perfect strike to put Villarreal behind.
Still, the Yellow Submarines were determined to stretch the Catalans. Fabregas and Mascherano picked up a yellow card each before Giuseppe Rossi almost found the net for Villarreal. But at the break, the score board indicated a 2-0 score line in favor of Barcelona thanks to Fabregas again. This time, the Spaniard didn’t produce an assist but a goal.
The first moments of the second period sealed the game for the Catalans as Alexis Sanchez scored his first goal in a Barcelona shirt since quitting Udinese. Villarreal’s Diego Lopez had no chance of stopping the Chilean’s far post shot.
A few minutes later, the goalkeeper conceded yet another goal as Lionel Messi finished off Andres Iniesta’s great ball. For La Pulga, this goal was 100th at the Camp Nou. For Villarreal, this goal meant game over.
Iniesta made way for substitute Xavi 4 minutes before the hour mark while Marca Senna replaced Nilmar for Villarreal. Wakaso for the visitors and David Villa for the hosts also entered the game as it progressed. It seemed like the Yellow Submarines were in for damage limitation whereas Barcelona’s home crowd and team were in search of more goals.
Messi provided just that inside the 75th minute. The battle that could have been a close affair had transformed into a total exhibition of Barcelona’s untouchable midfield and fine attack.
What a miserable night for Villarreal! The Yellow Submarines’ boat couldn’t be pierced more than that.
