Argentina are fresh from their first 2011 Copa America victory. But will it be their last? Can they build on it?
Lionel Messi was in great form against Costa Rica while Sergio Aguero and Di Maria responded quite well to the expectations set on Argentina’s attack. Questions could be asked, however, about Gonzalo Higuain’s unconvincing performance. Too many clear opportunities for the Real Madrid man.
However, Sergio Batista is likely to give Higuain a starting XI place against Uruguay. According to Terra US, Argentina’s lineup for the Costa Rica match could be the same for the quarter-final fixture against the Uruguayans.
Goalkeeper: Sergio Romero
Defenders: Pablo Zabaleta, Nicolas Burdisso, Gabriel Milito, Javier Zanetti
Defensive midfielders: Fernando Gago, Javier Mascherano
Attacking midfielders: Angel Di Maria, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero
Lone striker: Gonzalo Higuain
The interesting point ahead of Saturday’s second quarter-final match at the 2011 Copa America is that pundits haven’t tagged Argentina as clear favorites to win. On paper, remarkably, it would be hard for any team to defeat the Albiceleste. But as long as the ball is played on a pitch and not on paper only, the Uruguayans are determined to take their chances.
“We are used to coming through difficult games like last year [at the World Cup],” Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez told reporters this week.
“And this is a very difficult game, but we are very motivated for it.”
