Colorado Rapids vs FC Dallas Match Preview
The MLS Cup will crown a new Champion on Sunday night when FC Dallas and Colorado go head to head at BMO Field in Toronto.

The 2010 MLS Cup Final will see a new champion crowned as FC Dallas take on the Colorado Rapids.
The MLS Cup Final will be contested by two wild-card teams, with Dallas being perceived as the favorites to take home their first MLS Cup title. FC Dallas will be playing in their first ever MLS Cup Final, while the Rapids will be at their second. Colorado lost the second ever MLS Cup final 2-1 to D.C. United in 1997.
It has been a long road to the Cup Final for FC Dallas. Their opening home game was played in front of only 8,016 fans, and mush discussion centered around the seeming lack of interest in the team. After Dallas went on to win only 2 of their opening 10 games, few fans would have predicted what has transpired.
FC Dallas lost to the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 at home on May 20, but the Hoops did not lose again until October 16 when they fell at Real Salt Lake, a team they would later eliminate from the playoffs. The run of 19 games unbeaten in a single season set a new record for Major League Soccer, and helped Schellas Hyndman win the Coach of the Year award.
The biggest strength of FC Dallas is the outstanding central midfield pairing of League MVP David Ferreira and Daniel Hernandez. Hernandez is a commanding defensive presence, which allows Ferreira to push forward and cause problems for the opposition. The Rapids midfield duo of Jeff Larentowicz and Pablo Mastroeni will have a tough task containing the dynamic Ferreira.
Dallas will also be string at the back, a good defensive line is supported between the posts by Kevin Hartman. The outstanding performance of Hartman kept out the Los Angeles Galaxy in the Western Conference Final, and is a key reason for Dallas being in this game.
Colorado may be underdogs but that is not something they are unfamiliar with. The Rapids entered the playoffs as the seventh seed in an eight team field, yet still find themselves holding the bizarre geographical title of Eastern Conference Champions.
The Rapids eliminated the Columbus Crew from the playoffs before triumphing over the San Jose Earthquakes in the Eastern Conference Final. Midfielder Larentowicz will be hoping the conditions on Sunday are an advantage for the Rapids. “it will be a little different in Toronto, a bit wet. Certainly not something Dallas have been used to,” Larentowicz told the MLS website.
A constant threat for Colorado will be their impressive front pairing of the powerful Conor Casey next to the lightning fast Omar Cummings. Casey and Cummings finished the regular season with 13 and 14 goals respectively, the pair have also combined for 1 goal and 2 assists during the playoff run.
As if the talent on display wasn’t exciting enough, there appears a little added spice to this fixture in the form of some good old fashioned trash-talk. Shortly after the victory over LA, Dallas Captain Hernandez said, “no disrespect to the Eastern Conference, but tonight was the championship.”
Colorado Coach Gary Smith by saying the Rapids are capable of winning the trophy, and the eventual champions will be “the team that grits their teeth and gets on with it.”
So the battle lines have been drawn, favorite against underdog, West against (sort of) East, let battle commence.
Colorado Rapids vs FC Dallas Match Report
The Colorado Rapids won their first MLS Cup title with a gritty 2-1 overtime win against FC Dallas.

Colorado Rapids Captain Pablo Mastroeni celebrates with the MLS Cup trophy.
League MVP David Ferreira opened the scoring for Dallas, before Conor Casey equalized to send the game into overtime. In the extra period good play by Macoumba Kandji resulted in the game winning goal bouncing into the Dallas net off unfortunate Hoops defender George John.
The game was scrappy and physical from first minute to last, but FC Dallas managed to keep possession well in the first half and opened the scoring with a lovely goal 10 minutes before half time. Martin Chavez got free on the right flank and sent over an inviting cross that was volleyed home by Ferreira who had drifted between the Rapids center backs.
The Rapids got back into the game in the second half though it was more through substance than style. An increasingly chippy encounter saw many confrontations and hard tackles, but Dallas began to lose momentum. Daniel Hernandez is Dallas’ most dominant defensive midfielder, and the fact he was playing with a knee injury began to show and Pablo Mastroeni and the Rapids began to gain the upper hand.
Conor Casey leveled the scores for Colorado in the 57th minute. Scotland international Jamie Smith penetrated the Dallas backline down the right flank and sent in a low cross that eventually resulted in Casey prodding home the loose ball after his first shot was blocked by Kevin Hartman.
The intensity ratcheted up as full time drew nearer and the referee struggled to deal with a game that involved numerous confrontations and was at risk of boiling over. Despite plenty of effort, neither team could break the 1-1 tie, and the MLS Cup final headed to overtime for the second consecutive year.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the deadlock was broken and substitute forward Kandji was at the heart of the move. The former Red Bulls forward sliced opened the Dallas defense and fired the ball towards goal, the ball took an unfortunate deflection off John and agonizingly rolled into the Dallas net to send the Rapids fans into rapturous celebrations.
In an incident that summed up the physical nature of the game, Kandji was injured while setting up the decisive goal and was subbed off amid furious protests from Dallas payers who accused him of time wasting. Kandji was unable to reurn and having used up all their substitutes, Colorado were forced to close out the game with only 10 men.
Dallas pushed forward bravely in search of an equalizer and came close twice. First John almost made amends for his error with a strike that produced a magnificent save from Matt Pickens, then Jeff Cunningham beat Pickens but had his effort cleared off the line by former Dallas defender Drew Moor.
When the whistle blew the Rapids showed their joy with delirious celebrations, and Toronto’s CN tower was illuminated in burgundy to honor the club and their first MLS Cup title. Goal scorer COnor Casey was named MVP for the Rapids.
