FC Dallas vs Real Salt Lake Match Preview
Defending Champions Real Salt Lake will travel to FC Dallas to be faced by some reminders of their expansion roots. FC Dallas Assistant Coach John Ellinger was the original Real Salt Lake head Coach, and was also the man who brought current RSL Coach Jason Kreis to Utah. Leading the Dallas attack will be Jeff Cunningham, was a scoring star on Ellinger’s Salt Lake teams and will be full of motivation to down his former club.After riding a league best 19 game unbeaten streak, FC Dallas will now enter the playoffs with a two game winless streak but have plenty of confidence. Cunningham and midfield playmaker David Ferreira will be important figures for Dallas, as they will be desperate to take lead with them when they make the tough trip to Rio Tinto Stadium for the second leg.
Head Coach Schellas Hyndman is well aware of the threat Salt Lake pose and will be working hard to prepare his team. “They’re obviously a very good team. They really turned it on at this time of the season last year. They have been able to carry that momentum throughout this season,” said Hyndman.
There will be no complacency from the defending Champions. Real Salt Lake have lost every road game they have ever played at FC Dallas, and will need to perform well to avoid a first leg deficit.
RSL defender Nat Borchers clutched at straws and gave a frankly horrendous explanation for Salt Lake’s woes in Dallas.
“We come down there usually in the summer months and we don’t deal with the heat and humidity and that really drains us,” said the defender. Unfortunately for Borchers, only one of the eight games Salt Lake have played in Dallas has been over the summer.
Salt Lake could well sit deep and look to hit Dallas on the break. Midfielder Andy Williams suggested as much in his pregame interviews. “The key is not to concede any early goals. We’re going to sit back and we’re going to pick our moments to attack and make it difficult for them to get behind us,” said the Jamaican international.
