Columbus Crew vs Colorado Rapids Match Preview
Columbus ended their MLS winless streak with a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union in their regular season finale. The win will give the number 2 seed Crew confidence heading into their playoff run. The Crew will also be heartened by the performance of star man Guillermo Barros Schelotto who scored against the Union and will be a key figure in their playoff run. “the best moment of the season is the playoffs,” said the Argentine playmaker.
It was not all good news for the Crew against Philadelphia however. Starting goalkeeper William Hesmer fractured his shoulder in the win and will not feature in the playoffs. Backup goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum will assume the starting role.
Further concern for the Crew comes in the form of fatigue. Ahead of the road trip to Colorado, where they will play at altitude, the Crew have spent around 35 of 67 days travelling or on the road.
Coach Robert Warzycha expressed his concerns in words that will not exactly inspire his players; “Not only is it being tired from the travel but we haven’t had time to do what we’ve wanted to do in practice,” bemoaned Warzycha.
Colorado are preparing for their first MLS Playoff game in four years, with Rapids midfielder Pablo Mastroeni the only surviving player from the teams last playoff run. World cup vetran Mastroeni will look to win the possession battle and allow goal scorers Conor Casey and Omar Cummings to flourish.
Colorado’s defense could be entering the playoff run with fragile confidence. In their regular season finale Colorado held a 2-0 lead over bitter rivals Real Salt Lake, only to ship two injury time goals and concede a 2-2 tie.
The Rapids are doing all they can to create a raucous atmosphere for their playoff opener. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper has officially pronounced this week ‘Burgundy Week’ and encouraged residents to support the Rapids playoff bid. The team have also received public messages of support from players on the Denver Broncos, Denver nuggets and Colorado Avalanche. The Rapids will be hoping to use their home field advantage and travel to Columbus with a lead for the second leg.

Rapids roll ahead of the Crew to take the first leg

Colorado open the scoring early against Columbus
Colorado defeated Columbus 1-0 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The win gave the home side a narrow advantage in the two-leg Western Conference semi-final.
Pablo Mastroeni scored the only goal in the 23rd minute, after making a darting run from midfield to stroke the ball into the net.
The Rapids dominated the first half and appeared to have caught the Crew defense off guard. The second half saw the roles reverse with Colorado on the back heel and Columbus bringing the ball forward.
Both sides missed chances to score, and the Crew came very close to scoring late in the second half. Matt Pickens was superb and deserved to keep his clean sheet, after making several fine saves.
The Crew take home field advantage in the second leg of the tie at Crew Stadium in one week, and both sides will know the hard work is still to come.
