Netherlands vs Turkey Match Preview
The Netherlands will meet Guus Hiddink’s Turkey on Wednesday. The Orange squad only won one of five international matches in which their countryman was the coach of the opposing team.

Dutchman Guus Hiddink has a strong record as opposite coach against the Orange squad
Robin van Persie and Mark van Bommel teamed up with the Dutch squad on Monday. Their respective clubs Arsenal and Bayern Munich did not seem to be too happy to let the players go on international duty this week. Both Van Persie and Van Bommel come back from injuries. The Netherlands prepare for an international friendly versus Guus Hiddink’s Turkey on Wednesday.
With Van Persie returning Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk has a difficult choice to make in his lineup. The Arsenal ace played as centre forward during the World Cup, but on his position Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored at least once in the last four matches of the Netherlands and the Schalke 04 striker is Dutch top scorer in Euro 2012 qualification with 8 goals. Van Persie does not know what to expect from the Turkey match. “It’s up to Van Marwijk. I am training for two weeks now and I discussed joining the Dutch squad with Arsène Wenger. I really enjoy being back on the pitch and being back with the Orange squad.”
On Tuesday Van Persie revealed that he will not play more than 45 minutes. Van Bommel will also be available for half a match only. The Bayern Munich midfielder did not yet play for his club after his injury, but he was on the bench last weekend. Dirk Kuyt will not play at all. The Liverpool forward showed up at the training camp in Noordwijk on Monday, but had to withdraw with an ankle injury on Tuesday.
Dutch Turkey coach Guus Hiddink says that the Netherlands are favorites, but he thinks his own team will get its chances in Amsterdam. “The Netherlands were favorites as well when they played Australia and Russia.” Hiddink refers to his previous encounters as coach of a foreign national team versus the Orange squad, with which he reached the semi-finals of the 1998 World Cup. It will be the fifth time the Netherlands face Guus Hiddink as trainer of the opposite team. Only once did the Dutch beat him, in a friendly between the Netherlands and Russia (4-1) on 7 February 2007. Hiddinks most important win against Holland came during the 2008 European Championship quarterfinal: Netherlands – Russia 1-3 AET.
For one Turkish international the match against the Netherlands is very special. Nuri Sahin has a very close relationship with Dutch national coach Bert van Marwijk. “He is like a stepfather to me. He helped me a lot in my young career. He learned me to be self conscious. I’m very grateful to him.” The midfielder made his Bundesliga debut as a 16-year-old with Borussia Dortmund, where Van Marwijk was coach at the time. When the Dutch trainer moved to Feyenoord he took along Sahin on loan for one year.
For Van Marwijk the match will be a family affair. With Mark van Bommel he will have a son in law in his own Orange squad and a stepson in the opposing Turkish squad in the Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday.
Netherlands vs Turkey Match Report
The Netherlands played in their own Capital, but it seemed to be an away match in Amsterdam on Wednesday. The many Dutch Turkish fans in the stands were noisy but they could not prevent their team from losing 1-0. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored again.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored in his fifth consecutive international match
The Netherlands played their last match of 2010 and they end the year with the best international record around the world having played 17, winning 15, drawing 1. The only defeat came in the World Cup final versus Spain. Despite their splendid record and despite the noisy atmosphere in the Amsterdam Arena the Orange squad started uneasy. Turkey put pressure on the Dutch midfield, and both teams did not seem to be able to open up the game. In the second half Theo Janssen, who came on for Wesley Sneijder, gave the Dutch midfield a boost. Huntelaar scored in the 52nd minute after Hedwiges Maduro pushed through and provided a very precise assist.
Maduro played in the place of Mark van Bommel, who went home on Wednesday because of a recurring knee-injury. The Valencia midfielder had a tough job. Turkey coach Guus Hiddink decided to put pressure on Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart. “We did not want them to play the pass forward, let other players do that”, he explained after the match. Maduro was one of these players and he had to get adjusted to this difficult role. Sneijder could not put his mark on the match, but he was closest to scoring for the Netherlands, when he ferociously fired on target form a rebound of his own free kick. Goalkeeper Volkan Demirel saved with an superb reflex. Burak Yilmaz had the best chance for Turkey, but he saw Dutch goalie Maarten Stekelenburg stopping his shot.
For Joris Mathijsen the match ended in the 45th minute. The Hamburger SV defender injured his ankle severely when he came down after a header. FC Twente’s Peter Wisgerhof replaced him in the second half and thus made his debut in the Dutch national squad. Ten minutes from time Royston Drenthe also made his debut. The defender from Hércules CF was called up because of Dirk Kuyt’s late injury on Tuesday.
The Netherlands started very well in the second half. “We wanted to play an attacking game, but that’s difficult”, Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk said. “We pushed up in midfield to early in the first half. Defenders have to join in pushing up and that’s where we made the big mistakes. In the second half we improved a lot.” FC Twente’s Theo Janssen, more than Sneijder, managed to take control on the midfield. Robin van Persie also came in, not as a central forward but as a right winger. Huntelaar stayed on and scored the only goal of the match. The Schalke 04 striker has now scored at least once in last five matches of the Netherlands. The last Dutchman to score in five straight matches was Johan Neeskens in 1974.
Umut Bulut and Kazim Kazim had good chances to score 1-1 for Turkey, but Stekelenburg saved Bulut’s header and Kazim’s shot went wide. Hiddink still was satisfied with his team’s performance. “It was a real match and my team did well, we played a good attacking game not dropping back too much.”
