Atlético Paranaense vs Grêmio Prudente Match Preview

Fifth in the league on 53 points Atletico-PR are poised for their best finish since they were championship runners-up in 2004. A winning mentality has been instilled in the squad by coach Sergio Soares and, after two seasons of trying to avoid relegation, the team has a more vigorous and enthusiastic approach.

Prudente, on the other hand, are all but relegated. However, coach Fabio Giuntini has asked the players to fight through the last four games of the season until it is mathematically impossible to survive the drop to Serie B. That fate could be delivered by this Sunday.

As expected, Atletico-PR started the game by pressing their opponents but Prudente had the best chance of the first exchanges when Roberto was through on Joao Carlos but the goalkeeper smothered the attack.
After that fright, Branquino was fouled in the Prudente penalty area and the experienced Paulo Baier hit his shot into goalkeeper Sydney’s top right hand corner.

After 25 minutes Prudente’s striker Wesley was sent off for senselessly kicking defender Manoel. Despite that, in one of Prudente’s rare attacks, William Jose took advantage of a defensive mix-up and put the ball out of reach of Joao Carlos.

Sadly, for Prudente, two minutes into time added on, Ivan Gonzalez crossed for Paulo Baier to head home, so netting his second and sending Prudente down to Serie B.
