AE Larissa vs Olympiacos Match Preview

Olympiakos try to maintain their grasp of top spot in the Greek Super League with a win against last-placed Larisa. After spending nearly a month tied with Panathinaikos for 1st place, Olympiakos distanced themselves last weekend after overcoming Atromitos 2-1. Ernersto Valverde’s side must be weary of Larisa though as the league’s bottom side will be doing whatever they can to get the points needed to climb out of the league basement.

Chris Coleman was set to be named the new manager of Larisa, however the deal fell through. Jorn Andersen, the Norwegian manager and former boss of Mainz and Xanthi looks set to be installed as the new man to lead the club from the Thessaly region. The view by many is that despite the team’s current state, the presence of a new stadium and fervent home support can turn the club’s dire situation around.

Larisa lost their second match in a row at their new stadium as Olympiakos prevailed in a narrow 1-0 win. The victory put Olympiakos five points clear at the top of the Super League table and gave them the title of winter champions.

The difference in Sunday’s match was Panagiotis Katsiaros’ own goal 10 minutes before the break. The Larisa player could only help the ball into the net after fine work from Olof Mellberg who created space for himself in the box and his shot eventually could not be dealt with by the Larisa defense.

Ernesto Valverde’s team controlled the entire first half and should have perhaps been up by more than a single goal. Larisa were mere bystanders for most of the half, but did manage their best chance on 41 minutes when a superb play led to Daniel Cousin seeing his one-on-one opportunity turned away by Olympiakos goalkeeper Urko Pardo.

The home side appeared to have decent claims for a penalty in the 55th minute when Tumer Metin seemed to impeded by midfielder Moises Hurtado however the referee waved play on. Larisa have it all to do in the second half of the season as they are now in last place, four points adrift of their nearest rivals.
