Aris are riding high after their greatest ever European success. Hector Cuper’s side qualified for the knockout stage of the Europa League this week after defeating Rosenborg 2-0. The signs are there that Aris are finding a rhythm after an indifferent start to the season. Cuper was beginning to feel the pressure just a few weeks ago, but the club appear to be in good shape now as the first half of the season comes to a close.If someone were asked to name three prime relegation candidates earlier in the season, Xanthi would have surely been one of the teams selected. A fine run however has propelled the club from northern Greece into the top half of the table. This renewed belief will be put to the test at the Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium, but with the team in such good form they will expect a positive result.

Aris suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to reinvigorated Xanthi. A Dimitris Souanis brace was the difference at the Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium. Aris have shown difficulty this season after their European matches and this was the case again on Sunday as Hector Cuper’s side look second best against Xanthi. Souanis opened the scoring in the 22nd minute picking the corner with his angled drive after being played in on the right.Aris responded with a chance minutes later with an unbelievable double chance. Ricardo Faty’s long-range effort came back of the post and the follow-up header by Neto missed by inches. After that amazing miss, things got worse for Aris as they were reduced to 10 men following Kristy Vangjeli’s second yellow card.
In the second half Aris were the better side, but Souanis picked up his second and Xanthi took the points when the striker slotted home his own rebound with 20 minutes remaining.
