AEK Athens vs Olympiacos Match Preview
Having lost two in a row in league play, AEK are hoping that Saturday’s derby against Olympiakos can make for a fresh start to their season. Manolo Jimenez has succeeded in injecting a new excitement at AEK; however the results are still painfully inconsistent. This was in evidence last week as AEK went down rather meekly 2-1 to Kavala. Jimenez questioned his side’s desire and will be expecting a massive response against Olympiakos.
Ernesto Valverde’s side disposed of PAOK last Sunday 3-0 and took care of business against Ergotelis on Wednesday 2-0. A third win in six days against AEK would put the finishing touches on a fine week and show that Olympiakos’ title aspirations are alive and well. The club are undoubtedly in a period of great form and have rebounded well from last month’s loss to Panathinaikos.
AEK Athens vs Olympiacos Match Report
In a poor match at the Olympic Stadium, AEK defeated Olympiakos 1-0 on a late goal by Ismael Blanco. No side was able to settle and produce football of any decent quality resulting in a match of few chances, many fouls and little to interest the neutral.
AEK were the better side in the first half winning many individual battles across the park and conjuring up a few half chances thanks to the efforts of Leonardo and Nikos Lymberopoulos. Manolo Jimenez’s team had their best opportunity with a quarter of an hour gone as right back Sanel Jahic tried his luck from long range only for Olympiakos goalkeeper Urko Pardo to pull off a good save to deny him.
Olympiakos were not reaching the heights of their previous performances however Ernesto Valverde’s side missed a huge chance on 33 minutes when Belgian striker Kevin Mirallas failed to beat AEK goalkeeper Giannis Arabatzis with his attempted chip.
The second half was scrappier than the first with no real rhythm; it was Olympiakos however who threatened. And the Piraeus club had a glorious opportunity just before the hour mark with a penalty. Marko Pantelic was brought down by Leonardo, but Dudu skied his shot over the bar from 12 yards out. It put Olympiakos at 0-for-3 on the season in penalties. Just as the match looked destined for a draw, AEK managed to score a late winner.
Pape Bouba Diop surged into the box on the left and delivered a cross for an unmarked Blanco to tap home. There was enough time for Pantelic to badly miss from just outside the box in injury time, but AEK held on to claim a big victory, moving them back to within 8 points at the top of the standings.
