AE Larissa vs Panionios Athens Match Preview

Like PAOK, Larisa supporters must have been wondering where their team’s season was going just a few weeks back. However, some promising results including two vital points in away draws to Aris and Panathinaikos have put the team back on track. The team’s league position (11th) may still be a bit low, but the performances against two of the league’s top sides was enough to improve the team’s fragile confidence this season.

This is a special weekend for Larisa as it represents the club’s last official match at their historic Alcazar Stadium. The team move into the brand new AEL FC Arena in early December in a match against PAOK.

Panionios are going through a period of severe instability and any sort of positive result against Larisa will be welcome with open arms. Besides the club’s problems on the pitch which sees them now in last place, off the field issues took center stage this week.

In Larisa’s last ever match at their historic Alcazar Stadium; the home side went down to Panionios 1-0. It was a win against the run of play as Larisa controlled proceedings and had the chances. In an emotional night for Larisa supporters who bid farewell to their ground of 46 years, Larisa had the better of the opening exchanges.

Fabian Canobbio, Alexander Simic, and Tumer Metin all came close to opening the scoring for the home side however they failed to find the right touch, a problem plaguing Giannis Papakostas’ side all season. It was of little surprise then that Panionios made them pay just three minutes from the break. Andreas Samaris latched on to a long clearance and steered his shot through a crowded penalty box to score his first top-flight goal and the eventual game-winner.

Larisa continued to press in the second half and had several opportunities to score, however poor finishing and superb goalkeeping by Juergen Macho in the Panionios goal kept them at bay. The victory keeps Panionios in last place, though Akis Mantzios’ side will certainly have renewed confidence after this result.
