Panathinaikos Athens vs AE Larissa Match Preview
Entering the “softer” part of their schedule, Panathinaikos are aiming to retake the summit of the Greek Super League in the coming weeks. This weekend the defending champions take on Larisa, a side who was struggling but showed signs of improvement last weekend.
In truth, Larisa deserved a win against Aris in Thessaloniki and were unlucky to be held to a 1-1 draw. Currently 11th in the table, there is a real sense that this club can really make a run during the rest of the season. There appears to finally be some cohesiveness to the team’s play and in December there will be the big boost of moving into the club’s new stadium, the AEL FC Arena.
Panathinaikos rode their luck in defeating Atromitos 1-0 on Monday. The three points were crucial, but few were happy with the performance. Manager Nikos Nioplias blasted his players for looking like a veteran’s team at times and certainly supporters will be looking for a response against Larisa.
Panathinaikos Athens vs AE Larissa Match Report
Larisa continued their recent improvement with their 1-1 draw with Panathinaikos. Giannis Papakostas’ side took the lead in the 7th minute thanks to Daniel Cousin’s goal. Panathinaikos swiftly responded as Djibril Cisse blasted home his 8th goal of the season to bring the match back onto level terms.
Panathinaikos were below par throughout however and couldn’t take the initiative after the goal in order to push for another. Larisa meanwhile were giving little away and may have had a winner themselves had Stephen Makinwa finished a good chance after being set-up well by Cousin in the 76th minute.
Panathinaikos finally began to push forward toward the end, however Antonis Petropoulos saw his shot well-saved by Giorgos Abaris 10 minutes from time and then deep into added time Luis Garcia hit the post with a header.
Panathinaikos were booed off the pitch as fans were left frustrated by another disjointed display. The pressure is now beginning to build on Nikos Nioplias even though his club are now joint top with Olympiakos, though the latter still have to finish their match against Ergotelis.
Larisa meanwhile are in 11th, though confidence is high that they can keep climbing up the table after their fourth consecutive match without a defeat.
